Re: Accolades

Congrats to FH Coach Cecere, they had an excellent season and the honor was well-deserved. I'm not crazy about teams moving-up to avoid competition and hang banners, but can't deny that this team is deserving. You know you have built a good program when you have people willing to pick-up and move t...

Re: Who is

Benbow's game against Westmont his senior year might have been the single greatest individual performance I've seen in close to 30 years covering high school football. Heck, covering any high school sport. Little bit of a thread revive but you must have never seen Domenick Bragalone play.  His game...

Re: Who is

One other thing about Benbow ... it was either the week before or week after the Westmont game, he rushed for 255 yards on 10 carries against Central Cambria, IIRC. He was fast but he was big, too. There was another Benbow I think that played a couple of years earlier who was a lineman. Like maybe 2...

Three in eight days. Former Altoona baseball player Cody Henderson, then David, then Jude.

Re: Pennsylvania All-State Basketball Teams

Also a quick question.  Dillow, was also all-state in football correct?  Who were some others in our area that has received all-state honors in multiple sports in the same academic year? Very rare. I am thinking both Nastasis and maybe Steve Taneyhill off the top of my head. I'm sure I am going to ...

Re: Pennsylvania All-State Basketball Teams

Crimson's Ghost beat me to it with answering some of the questions about how the process works. Voters get a lot more than scoring average. They are provided full bios that include a wide variety of stats as well as notes than include colleges that offered scholarships, etc. And with about 600 schoo...

Re: Awards time.

I've found you always have to take tackle stats with a bit of a grain of salt. Particularly when you look at what gets recorded on MaxPreps. Since I've been with the Altoona Mirror, we've always used the NCAA stat-keeping rules, and our reporters can use those for keeping all the main offensive stat...

Re: Mirror Football All Star team

We do one of those, too, Crimson. The Blitz magazine is done well before the season. The Mirror football preview tabloid comes out a couple of days before the first game. Last year's was 64 pages, all high school -- we do our pro and college tabs separately these days. We do more of a huge factbox o...
