Quick Reaction: Aramis Ramirez

Post by Crimson's Ghost »

The Pirates cut a deal this afternoon for veteran third basemen Aramis Ramirez. Ramirez obviously made his way to the majors with the Bucs, and it all comes full circle on the 12 year anniversary of his trade away for the Pirates that he makes his way back to Pittsburgh. No harm done for the Pirates, as they deal away minor league reliever, Yhonathan Barrious. Barrios is a 23 year old who was having a strong year with the Curve, but has struggled since being promoted to AAA Indianapolis. He is not a top 30 prospect within the organization, thus making the deal rather inexpensive for the Pirates.

Looking at things in the present, it gives the Pirates an immediate upgrade in the lineup. Obviously the team is reeling a bit without regulars Jordy Mercer and Josh Harrison for a few more weeks, so Ramirez plugs a hole right away. The veteran third basemen is not having a great year with a .247/.295/.430 line, but he does come with 12 home runs and 42 runs batted in, so he does have some worth and is a significant upgrade over the likes of Brent Morel and Pedro Plorimon. Ramirez will likely assume the role as the everyday third basemen, and bat in the middle of the lineup. He is not great defensively at all, but his bat should help shore up an offense that is struggling.

In the long-term, Ramirez helps solidify the bench and be an occasional starter. He has zero versatility, as he is a third basemen only so he will have to compete for at-bats with Jung-ho Kang and Josh Harrison. It gives the team some options, and could even free up Harrison to play some right field at times. However you shake it, it helps the team immediatley and helps the bench and depth in the long term. All that for a minor league relief pitcher? Smart move.

Aramis Ramirez is batting .352 this month, so definitely a great move if he stays hot.

I don't see the Bucs making any crazy big blockbuster, so adding Ramirez is a good move for them. It sounds like they are working on a relief pitcher too, which they need. Caminero and Bastardo are two spots where they can upgrade.

Beyond that, they are one of the best teams in the league. With their roster currently configured They don't have to go too crazy. The Royals and Giants made the World Series last year with rather quiet trade deadlines. If a name they like comes up for the right price, sure they should make a move but first base is where they want to upgrade most and there just isn't a whole lot out there.

Ramirez and Kang'a emergence basically can allow Harrison to play some in right field and even second base against lefties. Ramirez gives them a stronger bench and allows their utility guys like JHay and Kang to bounce around when and where needed.
