District Six Power Rankings 12/24

Post by Crimson's Ghost »

I had some time, decided to get another ranking in before Christmas.   I'm starting to have trouble with finding schedules/scores, which is common with basketball because not every coach uses Maxpreps.  If you see any games I'm missing, please let me know.

1. State College 4-2
State College had a 2-0 week with wins over Mifflin County and Chambersburg.  The Chambersburg win was by one on a Drew Friberg three-pointer in the closing seconds. The Little Lions have now won three in a row and will look to carry that momentum into Wednesday when they play Shaler in the holiday Kiwanis Tournament.

2. Altoona 2-2
Altoona picked up one win last week to improve to .500 on the season.  They will now host a Holiday tournament starting on Tuesday of this week.

3. Mifflin County 1-4
Mifflin County snapped a 24 game losing streak with a win over Gettysburg last week.

1. Hollidaysburg 4-3
Hollidaysburg won the big head to head matchup with Central Mountain, in what will very likely be a preview for the 5A title in a few months.  The Golden Tigers also handled Penn Cambria at home to get back over .500.  They will take on #1 Quad A Johnstown in the Sheetz Tournament this week.

2. Central Mountain 3-1
Central Mountain battled Hollidaysburg to a close game, but obviously came up short. They have one game coming up, and that's a trip to Mifflin County on Friday.

3. Bellefonte  1-4
The Red Raiders picked up their first win of the season with a 47-31 mark over Philipsburg-Osceola.  They head to Penns Valley this week.

1. Johnstown 2-0
Johnstown cruised to a 17 point victory over Bishop Carroll to improve to 2-0. The competition picks up this week as the travel to Altoona for the Sheetz Tournament.  They'll take on their old AAA foe Hollidaysburg in the first game.

2. Forest Hills 3-1
The Rangers scored an easy 20 point win over Bedford to get to 3-1 on the season. Forest Hills will head to the Boswell Jaycees Tournament this week before the bulk of conference play begins.

3. Tyrone 4-2
Tyrone pulled off a 2-1 week with their lone loss coming to state-ranked Clearfield.  The Golden Eagles did grab a 2 point victory over rival Huntingdon. They are set to host Tussey Mountain this week in a non-conference game.

1. Westmont 4-3
Westmont went into Ebensburg and walked away with an overtime win over Central Cambria. It was a huge game for the big picture of the AAA playoff race early in the season.  The Hilltoppers then lost to Allegany of Maryland by 3 later in the week, but the Central Cambria win vaults them back to the top spot for now.  I anticipate AAA changing hands a lot throughout the season.

2. Central Cambria 4-1
Central Cambria was handed their first loss of the season as mentioned above. The Red Devils battled, but will have to wait until the postseason for possible revenge against Westmont.  Next up is the County Seat tournament as they host Blairsville in the opener.

3. Penns Valley 4-1
The Rams went 1-1 this week and hold steady in the rankings. They play host to Juniata and Bellefonte this week and it should give us a better picture of where Penns Valley is as a team.

4. Bellwood-Antis 4-1
Bellwood notched two convincing wins last week to move to 4-1 on the young season. They are off until the New Year according to Maxpreps.

5. Juniata 4-0
Like with football, it's hard to gauge this team playing mostly non-District Six schools. But 4-0 is 4-0, and that's nothing to take lightly. They'll head to Penns Valley this week and we should learn a little more about this team.

1. Bishop McCort 3-0
The Crimson Crushers had two pretty easy wins last week over Penn Cambria and Berlin.  They will look to defend their Windber Rotaty Tournament crown this upcoming week, and they will need to get through Shade on Tuesday night.

2. Bishop Guilfoyle 1-0
Finally the Marauders' basketball season is under way. They knocked off a pretty good Richland team by 5.  With their schedule being jumbled due to their run in football, not sure when their next game is. On Maxpreps, it's not until the New Year.

3. Moshannon Valley 5-0
Moshannon Valley had two dominating wins this past week to remain undefeated. They will test their luck in the Cambria Heights tournament starting Monday. The Black Knights will play winless Northern Cambria in the opener.

4. Portage 5-0
The senior trio of Swank, St. Clair, and Teno has Portage out to an impressive 5-0 start.  The Mustangs have yet to find themselves in a close game, but that could change with a game against United on Tuesday.

5. Penns Manor 4-2
The Comets handled a usually formidable District 9 team, Dubois Central Catholic 60-44 earlier in the week. They closed out the week with a nail-biter over Purchase Line to move to 4-2.

1. Saltsburg 5-0
Business as usual for the Trojans. They manhandled Homer Center and Penns Manor, two teams expected to be towards the top of the Heritage.  Saltsburg sent out a message they are the top team in the league, and the special season everyone was anticipating is under way.  They will try their luck in the Apollo-Ridge tournament this week with a game against Leechburg up first.

2. Ferndale 6-0
Ferndale is right on the heels of Saltsburg with an impressive 6-0 start. Senior forward Bruce Shaffer is having a big season thus far and leads the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 18 point per contest.  Ferndale will travel to Ebensburg for the County Seat tournament. They get Bishop Carroll to start, a team they already beat earlier in the year.

3. Williamsburg 3-2
The Blue Pirates went 1-1 with their win coming over reigning AA champ West Branch.  They will play Philipsburg on Thursday night.

4. Bishop Carroll 2-3
The Huskies had one game last week, and they lost to AAAA Johnstown by 17. They will look to bounce back against Ferndale this week in the County Seat Tournament.

Portage took a big hit last week as starting PG Jake Swank injured his ankle in their game against Claysburg. Not sure on the severity on the injury, heard he went for xrays but it was too swollen to see the results. He missed the next game against Windber and was in a walking boot.

CG, deleted my post because I was mistaken, got the number of games the Trojans and Lady Trojans have played mixed up. Sorry for any confusion (if you saw post before I deleted)

I heard Xrays were negative and he is back for Tournament. They should have a decent tournament though with Penns Manor and United. Excited to see the United-Portage match up
