District Six Boys Basketball Power Rankings 1/15/2017

1. State College 9-3
The Little Lions picked up two key wins this week to improve to 9-3. They avenged an earlier loss to Central Dauphin East by beating them 67-55. State High also knocked off Central Dauphin on Saturday.  State College welcomes Harrisburg to town on Tuesday in a huge game.  Harrisburg is one of the better programs in the middle part of the state, and they are also having a big season.  Certainly worth checking out if you are in the area.

2. Altoona 6-4
Altoona picked up a big road win over Hempfield on Saturday to move to 6-4.  The Mountain Lions head to Johnstown on Monday night. It will be another renewal in a long-standing rivalry between the two programs.  Altoona will host Gateway from the WPIAL on Saturday to close out the week.

3. Mifflin County 2-10
The Wolves dropped a pair of games last week to fall to 2-10.  They have now lost five in a row, and it doesn't get any easier with a trip to Carlisle and a home game against State College on Friday.

1. Hollidaysburg 8-5
The Golden Tigers remain in the top spot again this week. They hung with a good Williamsport team, but lost a close one to the Millionaires. They evened it out with a good win over Punxsutawney. Hollidaysburg will hit the road this week against a good AAA Central Cambria team, and then they have to make a trip to Johnstown on Saturday to play the Trojans.

2. Central Mountain 7-3
Central Mountain stays at two, but they are right on the heels of Hollidaysburg.  The two teams get a rematch in a few weeks, Hollidaysburg won the first meeting.  Central Mountain heads to Loyalsock on Monday, who boats a 10-2 record.  Should be a tough test.

3. Bellefonte 4-7
Bellefonte split a pair of games this week. They will be busy again next week with three games. The Red Raiders have home games with Jersey Shore and Penns Valley mixed in with a road trip to Huntingdon.

1. Central 9-2
Quad-A is turning into a very competitive race at the top, but the team emerging right now has been the Central Dragons. They have reeled off eight straight wins, and they are as hot as anyone in District Six at the moment.  They overcame a huge second half deficit against Huntingdon on Friday night to force overtime and steal the win. The Dragons head to Tyrone on Friday night.  One of Central's two losses this year came at the hands of the Tyrone in overtime, and the rematch should be a good one.

2. Tyrone 8-3
Tyrone picked up two conference wins last week to improve to 8-3.  As I mentioned above, there's quite the game shaping up on Friday in Tyrone.  The game has big implications in the Mountain League standings and in the District Six AAAA race as well.  The Golden Eagles do have a game with 1-12 Philipsburg on Tuesday before Friday's big game.

3. Forest Hills 7-3
Forest Hills split their two games last week. They lost to a good Central Cambria team, but went on to handle Cambria Heights.  The Rangers have big games this week with a trip to Westmont and a home game with Bishop Guilfoyle.  This team could use a big win after some rough losses recently.  I believe the AAAA race is shaping up to be a tight one, with Johnstown, Somerset, and Huntingdon right there with the top three teams.

1. Juniata 11-0
Hard to argue with the record right now, the Indians are one of three teams in all of District VI that are still undefeated.  They take on Midd-West this week in hopes of going 12-0.

2. Westmont 8-4
Westmont started the week off strong with an easy win over Bedford. They then dropped a close one to rival, McCort.  Hard to punish them much for that loss, though, the LHAC section II seems like everyone can beat everyone else -  it happens.   The Hilltoppers have a busy week at home with games against Forest Hills, Somerset, and Richland. All big games, should be an exciting week to be a Westmont fan.

3. Central Cambria 9-2
Central Cambria's twin towers had a big week, as Matt Holsinger and Evan Bopp came up big in two key conference victories over Forest Hills and Bishop Carroll.  The Red Devils have a big test this week with 5A Hollidaysburg coming to Ebensburg. It should be a good measuring stick for Central Cambria.

4. Richland 7-2
Richland is currently riding a six game winning streak, and this team is really coming on strong. This team's five leading scorers are all underclassmen and they are starting to gel together. It was very evident in their 30 point win over a good Somerset team last Monday.  They have some big road tests this week at Johnstown and Westmont.

5. Ligonier Valley 9-4
I'm moving Ligonier into the rankings after a good stretch of games they have been on lately. The Rams have won four straight but will be put to the test this week with four games on the docket. Road trips to Berlin and Northern Cambria start the week and home games against Penns Manor and Homer Center close it out.  The Penns Manor game in particular should be a good one, the Comets are 11-2.

1. Bishop McCort 8-2

Bishop McCort moved to 8-2 with a 2-1 week. They dropped a heartbreaker to Johnstown, but responded with a big win over Westmont.  They closed out the week with an easy win over St. Joseph's.  The Crushers host Blairsville and Bedford to start the week, and head to Somerset on Friday.  Earlier in the year, McCort beat Somerset on a buzzer beater.  The rematch should be a good one, and the atmosphere in Somerset will be lively.

2. Bishop Guilfoyle 6-3

Bishop Guilfoyle got back to their winning ways this past week. They handled Cambria Heights and Penn Cambria.  The Maruaders also went into Bellwood and beat a good Blue Devils team on their home floor. They host Diocesan rival Bishop Carroll and travel to Forest Hills this week.

3. Moshannon Valley 11-0

Moshannon Valley is just one of three undefeated teams in District Six at the moment.  The Knights did have to work this week, as they beat Williamsburg by six.  That's a notable score, because Williamsburg is just the second team to come within single digits of Moshannon Valley. Not that it means much, that's just to illustrate how good they have been. Friday night Bellwood-Antis comes to town, and that should be a big test as Bellwood is the only other team to hang with Mo Valley this year.

4. Penns Manor 11-2

The Comets went 3-0 last week, and have now won nine in a row. They are hot, and will look to keep it going this week with a home game against United and a big road game at Ligonier.

5. Portage 7-5

Nobody seems to be grabbing the fifth spot at the moment. Portage, Homer Center, Purchase Line, and United all have had bumpy rides lately.  I picked Portage for now, they are competing through some injuries admirably. They head to Davidsville to take on Township this week, a winnable game for the Mustangs.

1. Saltsburg 11-0
Saltsburg scored a big win heading into AAAAA Punxsutawney on Monday and beating them by 18. They continued their dominant ways against United and Purcahse Line. Nick Porter's 31 point output helped fuel the win over Purchase Line. The Trojans play four games this week with Conemaugh Valley and West Shamokin at home and road games at Marion Center and St. Joseph. I'm guessing the Trojans remain undefeated through this week.

2. Ferndale 12-1
The Yellow Jackets won three games last week to stay on Saltsburg's heels.  Fenrdale hosts Windber this week in hopes of moving to 13-1.

3. Juniata Valley 5-6
I slide Juniata Valley into the rankings after their head to head win over Williamsburg.  They go to Bellwood-Antis and have a home game with West Branch.

4. Williamsburg 5-5
Williamsburg lost both games last week, but they stay in the rankings with nobody else making a move.  The Pirates have a busy slate this week with three home games, highlighted by Wednesday's game against St. Joseph's Academy, which should be a big game in the Class A playoff race.
