District Six Boys Basketball Power Rankings 1/22/2017

1. State College 11-3
State College scored a big win over Harrisburg this week. They held off the Cougars off 63-60 behind a stellar 25 points, 6 assist, 5 rebound showing from Drew Friberg.  They finished it off with the week with an easy win over Mifflin County. The Little Lions take on Chambersburg at home and travel to Cumberland Valley this week.

2. Altoona 6-7
Altoona had a rough week. They traveled to Johnstown, and dropped one to the Trojans in overtime. Altoona then welcomed a very good Latrobe team to the Altoona Field House, and couldn't hang with the tough Wildcats team. It started to look really bleak when they were facing a 17 point deficit to Gateway, but Doug West's team forced overtime and secured a win to salvage the week.  Altoona gets Huntingdon at home this week.

3. Mifflin County 2-13
Mifflin County went 0-3 this past week and now find themselves in the midst of an 8 game losing streak. They get a home game with Cumberland Valley and head to Harrisburg this week with the hopes of snapping the losing streak.

1. Central Mountain 10-3
Central Mountain vaults into the top of the AAAAA rankings with a big 3-0 week. They capped it off with a statement 66-48 win over rival Jersey Shore on Saturday night.  Another tough week is on the horizon, and fortunately for the Wildcats, all the games are at home.  They open it with Tyrone and Midd-West on Monday and Wednesday. The big game of the week is Friday night, as they host fellow AAAAA counterpart Hollidaysburg. The Golden Tigers took the first meeting and Central Mountain will look to avenge the loss.

2. Hollidaysburg 9-6
Hollidaysburg had two tough road games this past week, and they split the meetings.  It started off great with a 57-43 win over AAA Central Cambria.   The offense went ice cold however on Saturday with a 48-44 loss to Johnstown.  Hollidaysburg scored only 4 points in the third quarter in the game with the Trojans. Only one game this week, and it's a big one -  a trip to Central Mountain.

3. Bellefonte 6-8
Bellefonte nearly had a perfect week. They lost a heartbreaker to Jersey Shore 54-53 to start the week. They followed it up with hard-fought wins over Huntingdon and Penns Valley.  The Penns Valley game in particular was a slug fest, as the Red Raiders prevailed 33-29.  They have a trip to state-ranked Clearfield that will highlight this week's three game slate.

1. Central 10-2
Central only had one game this week, but it was a huge one.  They held off Tyrone's comeback to take the rematch with the Golden Eagles 56-52. The Dragons have a busy week highlighted by a trip to Forest Hills on Monday.  The game on Friday at Penns Valley could be tricky as well.

2. Tyrone 9-4
Tyrone remains in the second spot for this week after a narrow loss to Central. It's clear it is pretty close between the top two teams, and a playoff rematch certainly seems to be where this season is heading.  Still, plenty of regular season of basketball left, and Tyrone has a road game with Hungtingdon and welcomes Clearfield to town. Should be a difficult week with two challenging games.

3. Johnstown 8-5
After a disappointing 71-52 loss to Richland on Monday, the Trojans recovered nicely. They handled Bedford then knocked off Hollidaysburg, avenging a loss to the Golden Tigers that happened earlier in the season. Two big games for the Trojans this week as they head to Sidman to take on Forest Hills and play host to Central Cambria on Friday.  Should be a good test for Johnstown.

1. Juniata 15-0
The Juniata Indians just keep winning. They picked up three wins this week to move to 15-0, and they are now just one of two undefeated teams in District Six.  They play West Perry and Susquenita this week, two teams with losing records.  Good chance they move to 17-0 this week.

2. Westmont 11-4
Westmont had a big week with three wins.  They outlasted Forest Hills in overtime and handled Somerset to start the week.  They then hosted Richland in a big LHAC Section II showdown, in which Westmont held off the Rams for a narrow 62-54 win. It now puts them in first place in their section heading into the second half of the season. Westmont has a very difficult game on Wednesday with a road game at Bishop Guilfoyle.

3. Richland 9-3
Hard to drop Richland for losing to Westmont, because they also crushed AAAA Johnstown 71-52 earlier in the week.  The LHAC has been full of parity this season, but Richland is right near the top.  They start 5 underclassmen, and go through their ups and downs, but this very well could be the most talented team in AAA.

4. Ligonier 13-4
After an up-and-down 3-4 start to the season, Ligonier has found their groove. The Rams have won 10 straight games and they are being led by one of the best sophomore in the area in 6'5" Marek Paola, who is averaging 18 points per game.  Ligonier went 4-0 last week, and picked up key rivalry wins over Penns Manor (76-38) and Homer-Center (67-60). The Rams have a big time showdown Tuesday night with undefeated Saltsburg coming to town.

5. Central Cambria 11-3
Central Cambria rebounded after a tough loss to Hollidaysburg on Monday.  The Red Devils crushed Cambria Heights and Penn Cambria to keep pace towards the top of the LHAC Section I standings.  The Red Devils have some big games this week, most notably a home game with Bishop McCort on Wednesday, the area's top AA team.  Should be a good one.

1. Bishop McCort 11-2
The Crimson Crushers cruised this week with three wins by an average 31 points, but this week should be tougher with a trip to Central Cambria on Wednesday. Should be a good one in Ebensburg on Wednesday evening.

2. Bishop Guilfoyle 7-4
Bishop Guilfoyle received some hot shooting from their sophomore guard Luke Ruggery, but it only resulted in a 1-1 week for the Marauders. They knocked off Bishop Carroll to start the week, but could not overcome Forest Hills on the road on Thursday. Only one game for BG next week, but it's a big one - a home game with Westmont.

3. Moshannon Valley 12-1
Moshannon Valley fell from the ranks of the unbeatens with a 68-65 loss to Bellwood-Antis. They will look to get back on track with three games this week. Juniata Valley at home Tuesday night should be the toughest of the bunch.

4. United 10-7
United climbs into the rankings with a 3-1 record from last week. They scored a big head to head win over Penns Manor that moves them past the Comets.  With Collin Moore, a freshman, and sophomore Kyle Silk leading the way, the young United squad may be finding their stride now.  They have a home game with Blairsville this week and a road date with Glendale.

5. Penns Manor 11-4
It was a rough week for the Comets, they dropped both games.  Still, their body of work speaks for itself - they are having a nice season. The road doesn't get any easier this week with road trips to Purchase Line and Richland.

1. Saltsburg 15-0
Nobody can stop the Trojans. In fact, very few can even hang with them. They had four games last week, with three being total blowouts. St. Joseph of the WPIAL kept it close, but Saltsburg prevailed 56-51. The showdown of the year in the Heritage Conference looks to be taking place Tuesday in Ligonier. Saltsburg will put their undefeated record on the line against Ligonier's 10 game winning streak. Should be a good one, and you better get there early - seats will be at a premium.

2. Ferndale 13-1
The Yellow Jackets are still hot on the trail of Saltsburg. They posted one win last week, a 48-31 victory over Windber. The game of the year in the WestPac seems to be taking shape for Wednesday, as Ferndale heads to Shanksville who boasts a 13-2 record.  That is another game where you should get there early, it will be a packed house.

3. Juniata Valley 7-6
The Hornets picked up a pair of wins last week, including a nice victory over Bellwood-Antis 62-59. They have a daunting task this week with a road game at one-loss Moshannon Valley. It will be a big test for Juniata Valley.

4. Bishop Carroll 5-9
I've been going back and forth on adding the Huskies back into the rankings, but I think at the end of the day they would beat most of the teams in class A.  They've been struggling in the LHAC, but when they have matched up against fellow class A teams, they've done well.
