District Six Boys Basketball Power Rankings 2/5/2017

Post by Crimson's Ghost »

AAAAAA

1. State College 15-3
Three big games upcoming for Joseph Walker's team this week, and all of them are at home.  They play host to Johnstown, Altoona, and Williamsport.  Williamsport will be the toughest of the three.  The Little Lions knocked off Carlisle and Central Dauphin this past week, and are currently riding an 8 game winning streak.

2. Altoona 8-9
Altoona ran into red hot Bishop McCort on Monday night and lost 75-62.  They then returned home and came up short against rival, Hollidaysburg 59-54.  They Lions have now lost three straight and need to get back on track. They host Williamsport and go to Mifflin County this week.

3. Mifflin County 2-17
Mifflin County lost to Central Dauphin and CD East last week. The Wolves will conclude their regular season this week. They head to Hollidaysburg tomorrow, then finish up with Chambersburg and Altoona at home.

1. Hollidaysburg 12-6
Hollidaysburg went 2-0 last week, and they had to earn it.  The Tigers played two tough, hard-fought, and close games on the road but came out on top against Central and Altoona. Only one game this week, and they play host to 2 win Mifflin County.

2. Central Mountain 13-5
Central Mountain has been very good this season. Still, even the Wildcats fell victim to a pretty sizable upset on Saturday night.  5 win Shamokin upset Central Mountain, after CM beat them by 14 earlier in the season.  It happens.  They'll look to get it turned around with three games this week, on the road at Mountoursville and home games with Shikellamy and Huntingdon.

3. Bellefonte 10-10
Bellefonte has found it's way to the .500 mark after a slow 0-4 start to the season. They beat Mountain Conference rivals Tyrone and Central last week. Now it's a quick turnaround, as they have to play Central again on Tuesday night. They also get 1 win Bald Eagle at home.

1. Central 12-5
Central lost two games last week, and in both games the offense seemed to struggle, mustering just 43 points in losses to Hollidaysburg and Bellefonte. I decided to keep the Dragons in the top spot, as their body of work is still strong.  They are also the top team in the playoff standings. They have a chance to avenge that loss to Bellefonte rather quickly as they make the voyage there on  Tuesday. Reggis Nevins' squad also has to travel Huntingdon in a big matchup for playoff seeding implications.

2. Johnstown 11-6
Johnstown scored a big one point win against Westmont on Wednesday.  The Trojans had the chance to sweep the season series against rival, Bishop McCort but came up on the losing end 58-53. The schedule makers didn't do Johnstown any favors this week, as they have three away games. They head to face top-ranked 6A State College on Monday, and then head to Somerset and Richland in big LHAC section II games.

3. Huntingdon 12-7
Three wins last week for the Bearcats. They beat Penns Valley by 17, Mount Union by 10, and Philipsburg-Osceola by 41.  Pretty dominant week. They have three big home games this week with Forest Hills, Central, and Central Mountain.  Given the way they have been playing in recent weeks, hard to bet against the Bearcats.

1. Richland 14-4
Richland retains the top spot this week. They pulled off double-digit victories in road games against Tyrone and Somerset.  They did have a poor showing against Bishop McCort, but it just seemed like one of those games the Rams can just try to forget about. They still sit in a three-way tie with the Crushes and Westmont in LHAC section II.  These last few games are still meaningful. They host Cambria Heights, Bedford, and Johnstown this week.

2. Westmont 13-6
Westmont continued their run of close games, but this time they came up short on Wednesday. They lost to Johnstown by 1 at home in a heartbreaker.  The Hilltoppers host Bishop McCort on Wednesday in a huge game. Not only is it a big game for the LHAC standings, but it's a big rivalry and the gym will be packed.  Should be a great atmosphere. They also travel to Somerset in what could be a tricky game, it's never easy to win at Somerset.

3. Juniata 17-2
Juniata split their two games last week. They handled county rival East Juniata 68-31, but lost to Newport earlier in the week.  The Indians sit at #2 in the District Six AAA standings. They host district six Tyrone on Saturday.   Juniata doesn't play many teams from the area, so it's hard to gauge how good they are sometimes and that game should help.

4. Ligonier Valley 16-5
After handing Saltsburg their only loss this season, the Rams had a chance to sweep the season series on Saturday. Saltsburg had other ideas and defeated Ligonier by 20.  So is a third matchup in store?  Maybe.  Ligonier has to get by West Shamokin Tuesday night in the Heritage crossover game, and the winner heads to IUP's Kovalchik Center Friday night for the Heritage Conference Champiosnhip. The first meeting was a classic though, as Ligonier held off West Shamokin by three in double-overtime.

5. Central Cambria 12-6
Central Cambria snapped a three game losing streak with a convincing 63-38 win at Forest Hills Friday night. They now turn their focus to their neighbors, Bishop Carroll.  The Huskies make the quick trip on Wednesday night.  CC has won the first two meetings this season against BC. They also have to go to Cambria Heights on Friday.

1. Bishop McCort 16-2
Impressive week for Bishop McCort, and they swept three tough games.  They handled 6A Altoona on Monday. The Crushers limited Richland to just 7 second half points on Wednesday. McCort escaped with a tough win against cross-town rival Johnstown on Friday.  The tough stretch of games continue with games at Bishop Guilfoyle and Westmont Monday and Wednesday of this week.

2. Bishop Guilfoyle 12-4
Chris Drenning's team is find their stride. The Marauders have now won five straight games.  They also have a solid lead atop the LHAC Section I standings with a convincing win over Central Cambria last week. Big game this week as the Marauders welcome Diocesan rival Bishop McCort on Monday night.  It could be a preview into the LHAC title game and the District Six AA championship game. Should be a good one.

3. Moshannon Valley 16-2
Moshannon Valley handled Glendale, but had to grind out a win over a tough Williamsburg team.  However it shakes out, the Knights went 2-0 last week. They are still on Bishop McCort's heels for the top spot in the playoff seeding. Three games in three days this week for Mo Valley, as they head to West Branch, Harmony, and and Claysburg-Kimmel in consecutive nights starting on Tuesday.

4. Purchase Line 13-7
Not many teams hotter than Purchase Line right now, and they move into the #4 spot this week. The Red Dragons have now won seven straight games, and put themselves into the Heritage Conference final four.  The task will be tall, as they go to Saltsburg on Tuesday, but if they pull the upset they will be heading to IUP Friday night for the Heritage Conference title.

5. Homer Center 11-10
Homer-Center picked up 2 wins last week to climb back over .500, including an impressive win 9 point win over United on the road.  They have a crossover game this week to conclude their regular season.

1. Saltsburg 19-1
In front of a packed gym, Saltsburg handled Heritage Conference rival Ligonier 71-52 to capture the South Division top spot. They also avenged their only loss this season.  They will host a surging Purchase Line team on Tuesday, with the winner set to head to the Kovalchik Center on Friday night.

2. Ferndale 17-2
The Yellow Jackets keep on cruising. They picked up road wins over North Star and Blacklick Valley last week. They get Portage and Meyersdale at home this week.

3. Williamsburg 10-7
Williams burg nearly pulled off the upset against Moshannon Valley, but came up short 39-35.  Just shows this Williamsburg team can be dangerous come playoff time. They have a tough road game at Penns Valley coming up on Monday, and that should be a good playoff prep game.

4. Juniata Valley 8-9
Juniata Valley has a big game at Williamsburg Tuesday night. The Hornets won the first meeting by six, and the rematch should be a good one.

Ghost I have a question you have state college playing Altoona this week but in Altoona's write up they have two games listed and no SC. Do they play this week?

I believe Altoona is at State College tomorrow night.  I could be wrong since Altoona's maxpreps has been behind this year.

Johnstown is supposed to play @ State College tonight. That's according to Johnstown's website and Maxpreps.
