There will not be a savings if they consolidate . The Saltsburg business community knows they will be hurt by Saltsburg students and parents spending their time in Blairsville, they will start a Charter School and the District will have to pay for each student that attends the charter school. Creating the B/S school district never should have happened in the first place.Students living one mile from Saltsburg travel to Kiski Area. If the school board continues to persue consolidation, a charter school would make sense not only for Saltsburg students but for some Kiski Area students that live in Bell Twp .

Brick and mortar charter schools are tough to make happen and even tougher to staff with quality professionals. Teaching openings are getting more and more difficult to fill and when the charter schools starting salaries are ten to fifteen thousand less than the surrounding districts....

Traditional public schools have not been funded per pupil for thirty years. The formula was created back in the day and from then on districts get a percent increase. The only places with per pupil funding are cyber charters and new brick mortar charters. These places literally can make or lose $100k with five special education students. The upside for these charters is that they can piggy back off of the transportation of the 'home' districts. The down side is a school without sports and clubs is not nearly as appealing, and it is very difficult to field many teams in these schools for a number of reasons.

Maybe you were more of a man than me but I wasn’t going to ride a bike 12 miles a day to save maybe 10 minutes. Winters get cold in central PA.
lol, yeah I probably would have left the bike in the garage too.

The folks in Saltsburg better remember that they will have to fund their own sports and extracurriculars should they choose to start a charter school.

The per student funding provided by the district can be used for extra curricular activities.

Does the Saltsburg football field belong to the borough or the school district? What building is large enough to handle K through 12? Is the old high school still in existence? If so, will that stage court be the basketball facility? What businesses would be affected by Saltsburg students attending Blairsville during school hours? How much will the businesses be affected by Saltsburg parents attending extracurricular activities or conferences?

Ligonier Valley has an activities bus that transports students from Ligonier to Laurel Valley High School.

What percent of students ride the bus? I don’t see very many students living around Saltsburg riding the bus to school, let alone an activity bus . Statistics show under normal circumstances 40% of the students are picked up and dropped off by an Auto. I would think with the additional time and distance involved for the Saltsburg Area students that percentage would even be higher.
