Best teams from schools not traditionally football powerhouses

Post by youngbuck »

Of course, we always talk about the traditional teams like Tyrone, FH, BC, etc.
But which schools have had that one memorable season

One that always comes to mind is the Dan Ferrens led Penns Manor team.
Another over achiever is the 1997? Ferndale team that won the district title.

1986 Johnstown Vo-Tech. That was before my time but that team must have been legendary because I heard about it regularly in the 90s.

You beat me to it OOL. I think they were 13-0 that year and beat a heavily favored Indiana to win the D6 AAAA title in 86. Vo-tech was usually penciled in as a win for most teams. They put it all together in 86 though.

I'm going to go with 2017 9-4 Ferndale Yellow Jackets

Losses to:

Windber 27-20
Berlin 7-0 in a monsoon
Portage 42-15, however beat Portage in the playoffs 14-12.
Homer Center (state runner up) 18-0 in another terrible rainstorm.

Hunter Kinsey passed for 2,617 yards 25 TDs, 9 INT.

Weather as a passing team was their biggest downfall.

Somerset 2014 14-2

Losses to Chadbourn led first state champ run BG 27-3
Archbishop Wood (State Champ) 63-20

This team would've faired better under current classification system.
If only closed minds came with closed mouths

Tyrone fans will love this one, United 1998. Not one spectacular player, but solid offensive line and great team defense. this was a fun team to root for.

Not just us they beat FH the following week. But yes United was a big heartbreak as a little Tyrone fan. Talked to coach Franco a year or two ago. Asked him what was the easiest game he had to prepare for. He said 99 against United the players were in a zone.

Conemaugh Valley Blue Jays and Coach John Jacoby had a great run in 1991, 1992, & 1993. 1991 team lost one game 6-0 to Saltsburg... Only points given up that year. 1992 District 6 A Champs- Rematch of regular season loss to Laurel Valley. Beat Joe Nastasi led NBC in OT in 1st round of states. Lost to Smethport in State playoffs. 1993 team 8-1 (lost to Davitch led Conemaugh Twp) did not qualify for playoffs due to only top 2 teams advancing.

I have a lot of good friends who were on that United team that we faced off against. You're right, no superstar player (John Burda was dang good and tough though), but they were solid at every position across the board. I will say, though, that United was a powerhouse in the 80's and 90s. Not so today with such low numbers.
