Inappropriate Adult Behavior at H.S Athletic Events

Post by Rumorman78 »

The above situations occurs in all H,S sports, but is much more noticeable in basketball, wrestling and other indoor sports. In a recent national survey, more than 2000 H.S. Athletic directors, were asked, what they least liked about their jobs. 62% said it was dealing with aggressive parents, adults and fans. The survey also stated that 80% of H.S. Officials quit after the first 2 years, and unruly parents and fans are cited as the reason why. What are some guidelines that be put into affect to solve this problem?

The embarassment of being escorted out of the gym by security obviously does not deter them. "Out in public", there's a misdemeanor charge called 'causing a public disturbance' that sometimes results in a sort-of stiff fine. Saw it once this year, a Philipsburg parent or uncle was given the exit at a FH wrestling match. Everyone is a referee in the seats.
It ain't over until it's over.

I was never one to get too excited about any of this type of behavior. I just saw it as "fandom" that got out of control..............however, it has recently (and quickly) esculated into something that I am not willing to overlook. Physical threats, throwing things and swearing are just some of the examples of what coaches, players and officials have to deal with.

I say it is time to start handing out those fines that Manfred mentioned!

It's worse in youth sports and non-sactioned events. I think it's partially due to not having effective bodies overseeing them and enforcing rules. I think the amount of money parents have to pay for those things makes them feel more entitled to act out as well.

Ironically, the fees are going up partially due to leagues needing to pay more for officials and support staff because nobody wants to put up with it.

I posted this in a different topic about a week ago, however it fits perfectly as it show coaches not being sworn at, but rather coaches swearing at referees at youth events.
Also have to love that the McCort circus of administration and supporters are OK with the suspended coach parading around in full McCort gear at youth tournaments swearing at referees and coaches while coaching on the mat. Disobeying rules about how many coaches and people should be in each wrestler’s corner in what looks to me some strong arm tactic of intimidation for youth that are the opponents. Especially as the announcer on some Flo wrestling feeds of the matches are commenting about how he should be ejected for vulgar language and not following rules. These people are so ridiculous and think they are above the rules…..probably how he ended up screwing up the HS careers of a bunch of kids that have parents who drank the kool aid. Absolute embarrassing behavior by an “adult” coach. Yet, McCort not only sits back with no actions to show a backbone, but even promotes how wonderful this shameful, cheating, lying, and damage causing “coach” has been for their program. Also, the word program is used very loosely, as a program is defined as a group that has been built up at one place and not assembled from greed and the deranged idea of scouring the US for the best talent with the least amount of ethics to try and dominate a small class of PA athletics. Congrats Bishop McCort, you seem to continually outdo yourself as a “district” and “administration” that sinks lower and lower each passing day. Your hockey “program” and wrestling “program” is really putting a spotlight on how prestigiously you conduct business at your academically focused institution. Most likely why your supporters are one of two groups, those from within the school and those from far enough away to only hear the sob stories posted online and in articles in the newspapers. The people around here see, hear, experience, and know better than to swallow that pill.
