MLB Umpiring
How can a guy that is umpiring tonight's Pirates' game keep his job? He is terrible. He does not call pitches that were strikes that Jones throws, then calls Hayes out on a pitch that wasn't even close. I know local amateur umpires struggle from behind the plate, but those guys are not doing the umpiring as their professional job.The automatic umpire can't come soon enough!!
Re: MLB Umpiring
Check the play by play on ESPN to see pitch locations and if they were balls or strikes. It's infuriating. Generally there aren't a ton of bad calls but the amount of pitches touching the zone and being called balls is ridiculous. Last week during one Pirates game there was a four pitch walk, all four pitches were strike. Three touching and one completely in the zone.
It's just a matter of time til automatic strike/ball by robot. No umps will lose their jobs, still need someone behind the plate. But the calls will at least be right. Best argument for the robo-ump is the fact it will lower injuries. It'll lower pitch counts for pitchers while at the same time lowering the chances for HBP injuries.

Baseball needs to get rid of that stupid strike zone box on TV broadcasts.
Re: MLB Umpiring
Only if players/managers could no longer be thrown out for arguing balls/strikes with the egotistical umps we see.

There’s no crying in baseball.

Yes. Just watch the game as though you’re in the bleachers. The box isn’t accurate. It’s two dimensional. The strike zone is three dimensional. Again, there’s no crying in baseball.

Maybe Bob Prince and "the Possum", Jim Woods will come back from the grave as well.
It ain't over until it's over.
Re: MLB Umpiring
I'm okay with calls high or low being a judgement call, but the non calls down the middle or way outside is just bad. Especially when some of these umpires don't line themselves up in a position to be successful.
