Re: Pitt/Penn St
The current 'rankings' that you see are not done by the group that will actually pick the playoff teams. Those rankings don't start until later in the season as I believe someone mentioned. So these rankings really don't matter. And for teams like Pitt and most of the ACC and Big 12, rankings won't ever matter because they will only get in by winning their conference. Money rules college football and the Big 10 and SEC are the money leagues. They will always get the bids. Enjoy the season Pitt is having and don't worry about rankings or playoffs, it is much more fun that way.
Re: Pitt/Penn St
For the most part the AP/Coaches/CFP have always been pretty close to each other. Usually there are 1 or 2 "surprises" with a team jumping or dropping a few spots but they are rarely drastically different. Once again, complain all you want about the AP or Coaches poll but they are 117 different qualified football opinions ranging geographically, by conference, profession, and by school size. It is a pretty fair snapshot at the end.Colonel Mustard wrote: ↑October 16th, 2024, 9:32 am The current 'rankings' that you see are not done by the group that will actually pick the playoff teams. I think Pitt has a path without winning the ACC. They have to beat Clemson though. If they finish the season with a win over Clemson and lose a close conference championship game to Clemson or Miami they would have a strong case as a top 11 team. Or if they finish 11-1 and don't make the conference championship game, that is probably even a path. They would probably need at least 2 other ranked wins but I think that is possible. SMU is ranked, Syracuse is 5-1, Louisville is 4-2, Cincinnati is 4-2, Virginia is 4-2, Boston College is 4-2, and WVU sits at 3-3 with all 3 loses to undefeated teams. I think at least 2 of those above teams can find their way into the rankings by the end of the season.
Re: Pitt/Penn St
Just to add a thought on Pitt and Penn State's path. The SEC scheduling has it set up for a bunch of carnage.
SEC playoff contenders along with their remaining schedules:
#1 Texas (6-0): #5 UGA, @ Vandy, Florida, @ Arkansas, Kentucky, @#14 Texas A&M
#5 UGA (5-1): @ #1 Texas, Florida (neutral field), @#18 Ole Miss, #11 Tennessee, Umass, Georgia Tech
#7 Alabama (5-1): @ #11 Tennessee, #19 Mizzou, @ #8 LSU, Mercer, @ Oklahoma, Auburn
#8 LSU (5-1): @ Arkansas, #14 Texas A & M, #7 Alabama, @ Florida, Vandy, Oklahoma
#11 Tennessee (5-1): #7 Alabama, Kentucky, Miss St, @ #5 UGA, UTEP, @ Vandy
#14 Texas A & M (5-1): @ Miss State, #8 LSU, @ South Carolina, NM State, @ Auburn, #1 Texas
#18 Ole Miss (5-2): Oklahoma, @ Arkansas, #5 UGA, @ Florida, Miss State
#19 Mizzou (5-1): Auburn, @ #7 Alabama, Oklahoma, @ South Carolina, @ Miss State, Arkansas
How many of these teams finish with less than 3 losses? If Texas wins this weekend, I can make an argument that every team in the SEC outside of Texas will have 3 losses by selection time (including a loss to Texas in the SEC championship). What the he!! do you do then?

Re: Pitt/Penn St
Pitt and Penn State both survived tough tasks to become just 2 of the 7 remaining P4 unbeatens.
I for the life of me don't understand how Pitt is still in the low teens in the polls. As many of you know, there are few things I dislike more than the Pitt Panthers but I just don't understand it.
There are only two ranked matchup's this week. #3 PSU vs #4 Ohio State and #18 Pitt vs #20 SMU.

I am a PSU fan and I do not believe Penn State is the number 3 team in the country at best they are number 6.

Re: Pitt/Penn St
I'm not saying PSU is the #3 team in the country but what have you seen from any team behind them that tells you there is someone that should be 3 over them?
Texas lost at home by 2 TDs and barely won @ Vandy. Ohio State has lost their only tough game they've played this year. Tennessee lost to Arkansas and needed a 4th quarter comeback to beat Florida. Miami lost to VT but the refs game them a win, then needed a frantic comeback to beat Cal.
Nick Saban said on gameday last week that he thinks Penn State is the most complete team in the country. Even though they very well might not be close to a #3 team I can't say I disagree. They can score, they can play defense, they have played pretty good special teams since switching kickers. There isn't a position that is a weakness.
They are good on both OLine and Dline, their DBs and TEs have been exceptional, good linebackers and running backs, above average QB play, and the WRs are average at worst. Overall that seems like a pretty balanced and deep football team.

Good team, yes but until they play 4 quarters of good football you are not going to change my mind. If they would play all 4 quarters like they have played the 3rd quarter I'd say they are a legitimate #3 team if not the #2 team. This weekend will tell it all but with Franklands recorded against top 10 teams and Ohio State I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Pitt/Penn St
If you are holding your breathe for a college football team to play four quarters of football the way PSU has played the second half against Wisky and USC, you are going to do a lot of breathe holding.
Once again, most teams don't play consistently. Heck Oregon needed a 4th quarter flurry of TDs to beat FCS Idaho and G5 Boise St. Georgia played a horrible 1st and 2nd quarter against Bama, bad first half against Miss State, and a bad 3rd quarter against Texas.
As I PSU fan, I hear this complaint a lot. Yet only 7 teams have played enough good quarters of football to be undefeated into November.

Regarding Pitt and Penn State, I am holding my breath hoping the both continue to win. How amazing would it be for PA football to have both major College Football teams in the first 12 team national playoffs. Rivalry aside, what an awesome thing it would be for our area to maybe put a breath of fresh air back into the dying sport of football in Western Pa.
I think that happened a little bit when the Pirates had their mini playoff (if you call it that) run in 2013-2015 for baseball.
Some good news for the area that we CAN compete on the National stage instead of the whole “we aren’t good enough” pessimistic crap that you hear all the time.
I think Franklin and Narduzzi are similar in the fact that they are relentless in the pursuit of what they believe will get them over the hump. For Pitt and Coach Narduzzi, it is building around his defense- that’s their strength. When Pitt gets a performance like they did last Thursday they can hang with anyone in the country.
For Franklin, it is building a roster to compete with Ohio State. Speed along the D Line and depth is key. Their (OSU) 5 star athletes run you down. We all know the history or Franklin and OSU, but don’t think for a second that beating them isn’t what he breathes for everyday of his existence. They have competed most years with them pretty well. If/when they beat them, it will likely be at Beaver Stadium and they will likely have to win the turnover and penalties battles. Time will tell, yes the odds would suggest they’ll likely lose, but if you aren’t excited and pumped this week for PA football (1st round of playoffs for high school as well, Steelers are in first in the AFC North) you don’t have a pulse!
