Lambert’s three-hitter lifts NS over Blacklick

FERRELLTON — Freshman Megan Lambert fired a three-hitter with four strikeouts as the North Star girls opened the high school softball season with a 2-1 victory over Blacklick Valley on Tuesday.

Ondrea Tomko batted 2-for-2 to lead the Lady Cougars’ offense. Sarah Pelesky provided a hit and a run scored while freshmen MacKayla Maust, who drove in a run, and Rachel Druist each delivered a base hit.

Blacklick pitcher Lauren Wiegman posted six strikeouts and scattered five hits.

Berlin 8, Meyersdale 0

BERLIN — Megan DeMartino struck out 12 batters, issued two walks and allowed only three hits in Berlin’s 8-0 season-opening girls varsity softball win over Meyersdale on Tuesday.

DeMartino helped her own cause with two hits and two RBIs. Teammate Haley Albright added a triple and a run batted in.

Meyersdale pitcher Courtney Hersch had six strikeouts and gave up five hits. Elizabeth Caton delivered a double at the plate.

Shade 14, Salisbury 0

CAIRNBROOK — Erin Spinelli and Kelli Shaw combined to throw a no-hitter as Shade shut out Salisbury 14-0 Tuesday in a girls varsity softball season opener for both teams.

Winning pitcher Spinelli threw four innings with four strikeouts and five walks.

Whitney Kline crushed an inside-the-park grand slam homer while Kristin Corradini, Casey Roberts and Shayna Kalanish added two hits apiece for the Lady Panthers.

CC 9, Somerset 4

EBENSBURG — Central Cambria dealt Somerset a 9-4 defeat Tuesday in the Lady Eagles’ varsity softball season opener.

Somerset jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Central Cambria battled back with four runs in the second, one in the fourth and four more in the sixth.

The Lady Eagles scored a lone run in the top of the seventh when Nicole Shaffer reached base on an error, scoring Abby Sicheri, who led off with a single.

Ashley Humbert and Jamie Emert led Somerset with two hits apiece. Sophie Kashurba contributed a hit and two RBIs. Autumn Yoder (5 1/3 innings) and Emert combined pitching efforts.

“Defensively, we played very well with no errors and even turned a 4-6-3 double play,” said Somerset coach Glenn Kashurba.

Turkeyfoot 18, Shanksvile 8

HARNEDSVILLE — The Turkeyfoot softball team opened its season Tuesday with an 18-8 win over Shanksville for new head coach Brandy Griffith.

Renee Nickelson smacked two doubles and a triple and sister Amanda Nickelson added a double and a triple in the win.

Kayla Maust singled and tripled in the Lady Vikings (0-1) season opener.

The Lady Rams (1-0) travel to Meyersdale on Thursday.

CV 13, Windber 4

WINDBER — Freshman Holly Glass struck out nine and went 4-for-4 from the plate to lead Conemaugh Valley to a 13-4 win over Windber Tuesday in softball.

Caroline Sharpe was 3-for-3 with three runs scored for the Lady Blue Jays.

Jill Pentazer, a freshman for the Lady Ramblers, went 2-for-3 with a double and three stolen bases. Sarah Berkey went 2-for-4 with a triple and Sarah Oldham went 2-for-3 and scored a run. Oldham went the distance on the mound. She struck out five and walked two.

Coaches said errors hurt the Lady Ramblers in their season opener. They committed seven errors — six in the first two innings.

Windber (0-1) travels to Blacklick today.
