Should the Pirates trade Hahnrahan for a bat?

Post by Coach »

If so, who is your closer? I'd go with Grilli and Lincoln would be my 2nd choice....and yes I'd do it. A batter plays every day. Another closer, even of they blew 2-3 saves, doesn't have the same impact as a big time bat.

NO Why would you break up a system that is working VERY WELL!!. It is the number one bullpen for a reason. Everybody is doing their own job in their own role!! You take the hammer out of this equation you could ruin the chemistry!!. By the way who would be worth trading him for?? It better be a legit bit bat not a gamble like Ludwick last year.

Yes, most closers have a short lifespan. Trade him while he's hot. I think he would bring something really nice in return.

I would in a heartbeat, closer are typically a dime a dozen. Then I'd move Lincoln to closer and leave Grilli in the 8th inning. Hanrahan alone could probably net a very nice bat. Throw in a few prospects like Robbie Grossman and one of those AAA lefties, and you could get a really really nice return.

Regardless, he still is the Pirates BEST pitcher. Good teams in the race look to add relief pitching, not dump it. I understand the batting, but still. He can shut down an inning for you when you need him. Nobody else in that Bullpen is a sure thing.

You can't get something for nothing however... I'd rather send a closer over a starter like Owens or Locke. If the Pirates brass thinks that Hahnrahan is an option for another 5+ years then I'd reevaluate my stance because the stability is important too.

I actually had this discussion w/ my brother. He's against it, I'm for it. I think Lincoln or Cruz would be a decent closer. We NEED some help around Cutch. Someone to hit behind him. Maybe a Willingham, or Soriano. G.I. Jones is too streaky to put fear into pitchers who will begin to pitch around Cuth.
