A better story would be PSU's "mythical" 1982 NC, where they lost to a 4 loss Alabama team by 3 TDs, then got a critical call from team MVP Don Guman to eek out their first NC.
That '82 NC by PSU is no more or less legitimate than Pitt's 9 titles.
