Re: Pitt spring game cancelled
Pitt's attendance numbers are very misleading. They base their attendance from tickets sold, not people through the gates. If you believe Heinz field was 82% full throughout the year, you will believe anything. They almost had a full stadium for Notre Dame and Florida State. Old Dominion negated that because their was said to be < 25k at the game. I am friends with 3 Pitt season ticket holders who don't blow smoke or the company line. Every one of them laughs at the 51k average attendance.
I agree with apk regarding Pitt's spring game. If it becomes more embarrassing than helpful, it probably makes sense to pull the plug. Make no mistake though, it is a huge benefit. The only reason why Texas A&M isn't having a spring game is because they are having an open practice while their stadium is renovated and they want recruits on campus.

Having been to nearly every game for 10 years, Pitt approximate attendance is closer to 44-45 than 51. The two big games had over 60K. UVA and UNC were good crowds also. The other three brought it down. Pitt doesn't draw well, but it isn't Miami bad either. Still the better opponents will slowly help matters.

The spring game has been more harm than good for Pitt so I like the move of just cancelling it. It is embarrassing to have a couple hundred people watching at a HS stadium. Other schools draw well because they can take a break from cow tipping to go watch some football in April.

I remember when Fitzgerald and Rutherford were at Pitt, they seemed to draw very well by Pitt standards. I think that was the most excitement Pitt had around their program since the 80's, but then they fired Walt.Crimson's Ghost wrote:Having been to nearly every game for 10 years, Pitt approximate attendance is closer to 44-45 than 51. Pitt was preseason #9 that year and had a home schedule with Notre Dame,Miami, and a college Gameday date with Va Tech. That was Pitt's best attendance ever at Heinz, the Firzgerald excitement really had people into it. Even Ball and Kent state had 50 some thousand in the house
Walt Harris was never fired, he stayed another year an went to the a Fiesta Bowl than left for Stanford.
The 2008-2009 seasons were well attended. Pitt climbed to #9 and beat Notre Dame on national tv, And had a shot for a Sugar Bowl against undefeated Cincinnati. The two best and hyped crowds I can ever remember at Heinz.

Re: Pitt spring game cancelled
Pitt isn't having a spring football game, but they run a relatively clean athletic and academic program (nobody's perfect contrary to the PSU success with honor mantra where they truly believe they were, are, and always will be perfect) and a university where academics, research, and scholarship are top priority and where success with honor isn't a lie purported by a football coach or a punch line.
PSU has a spring football game every season since forever, where upwards of 50k attend, their program generates 9 figures in revenue, yet their head coach, AD, a top supervisor, and university president knew young children were being violated by a professor and football coach emeritus for almost 2 decades (at least.) The gross negligence, absurd inaction, and coverup by all four smacked of self serving arrogance and unrivaled corruption and created an indelible stain on the university and far more important on innocent children and their families, a tainted, repulsive blemish that will never, ever be removed from American lore.
PSU is a place where college football is not just the top priority, but the only priority. Oh yeah, and the university pays local liquor establishments $5000+ to stay closed on State Patty's Day. Where does that money come from?
Now the discussion here was what? Spring football?
Priorities.

Didn't see any other university on national news broadcasts for raising over $13,000,000 for kids either. Shame they don't have their priorities straight!
You play to win the game!!!
