Re: Somerset Vs. Archbishop Wood Official Thread
I know more about Wood than I want to. Last season my towns team was 14-0, after knocking off Bethlehem Catholic in the playoffs. Our Berwick Bulldawgs were thrashed by Wood 42-14. Steve Devlin is the head coach and is seeking his third state title. Mike Carey ( ex Pitt Panther) coaches the o line and defense. Carey was a long time ast . coach at Central Bucks West for Mike Pettine Sr and at North Penn. He has won state title rings at all stops. I believe he has seven rings and is considered a elite coach by many. Alex Arcangeli is a hoss at fullback. The 220 pound senior transferred in for his final year of eligibility, thus teeing off many of Wood`s critics. No question about this fact, Wood is the most disliked team in the state. The bringing in of seniors athletes has angered a lot of coaches. The Philly demographics with four of the top five populated counties have created super power charter and private schools. These teams have access to players in Philadelphia , Chester , Montgomery and Delaware Counties. I know St Joes has Jersey kids, their school is a mile and a half from the state line. The no border , no boundary topic is a hot one. The question of a level playing field continues to be explored each year, as we venture into deep playoff waters. Berwick was under fire for kids showing up in the 90`s, when the Dawgs were gaining state and national acclaim. There were kids that appeared and Gus Felder was highly publicized. Felder was a kid that was at a juvenile correctional facility. He played two years here and at Penn State. He could barely read when he came here and is now on the Georgia Bulldog coaching staff. The vast majority of these kids here were Berwick kids. I can think of a half a dozen kids over a decade and a half that saw playing time. I get back lash from the private and charter schools for my comments. I am a Somerset fan this week. Click on the printable roster for sizes and weights.....http://www.woodfootball.org/roster.html

If somerset can pull this one off too I think we could see a sequel to miracle on ice. Or maybe the mighty ducks. Lol. In all seriousness these somerset boys have the attitude. They can play with the best and they believe they can beat the best. Thats an awesome attitude to have in high school football. They were fired up on saturday. Both teams were hitting very hard. It was an awesome game to watch. But this saturday they need to play they're best game of the season.

No doubt, Archbishop Wood is the truth. I don't know if Somerset has been playing outta their minds the past 3 games but they'll need to bring that type of effort and then some against Wood. At this point, I'm sure the Somerset Eagles are not intimidated by any team regardless of how many D-1 prospects they have. They're just playing extremely loose like a scrappy underdog with nothing to lose because nobody outside their locker room ever expected them to be here. The way I see it, all the pressure will be on Wood which could work in Somerset's favor.
Regardless of what happens against Wood on Saturday, those kids will go down as legends in Somerset football history and they deserve all the accolades that will come their way. As a Johnstown High School alumni and current Trojan fan, I'll be rooting hard for the them to pull off the upset and continue their magical run to Hershey. LHAC stand up!!!

Just a little story here. In 2008 if memory serves me right the somerset baseball team lost their first 4 games. They were counted out. They ended up making the playoffs and winning something crazy like 15 of their next games. The team went into the state playoffs much like this years football team. Nobody thought they would do anything after districts. They then made it to the state semis. Escorted back to town by fire and police also like this years somerset football team they went on and beat I think west Allegheny who had their ace drafted by the red sox a few weeks prior. They gave him his only loss that year. They ended up falling short to a good Berwick team in the finals but alot of similarities between the two teams from different sports. I understand football is a completely different animal just a cool little story or a similar situation.

I wish Somerset all the best, but I think it will be a running clock by halftime.

They will absolutely have their hands full. Wood is the real deal. Somerset will have to play their A+ game and they'll need Wood to commit a bunch of turnovers.

Of the 8 games this weekend. Sharpsville to Clairton and Sometset to Wood would probably be the two biggest underdogs.
