I'm by no means an expert on ethanol, but I heard that it would take more natural resources to produce it than would be saved in using it. But don't tell that to the folks in the mid-west (corn belt) if you want to make it through the Iowa caucases.

LionPride is correct, in that recent studies have shown it takes more energy, at this point in time, to produce ethanol alcohol from corn or whatever, than you get in return. That doesn't mean we should throw up our hands and give up. Necessity is the mother of invention. Years ago, quite a few inventors came up with carbureted vehicles getting 100 MPG. They were snuffed up by big oil, because it wasn't productive for big oil. Then amazingly, the government steps in with emission laws, so fuel injection became mainstream automotive technology. Carburetors became obsolete, except for racing vehicles. There are plenty of petroleum reserves in Alaska and elsewhere in the United States if our lawmakers could get their hands out of the back pockets of BIG OIL long enough to develop them, and while they are at it, build a few new refineries with modern technology to handle the refining so we could thumb our noses at overseas oil interests.

I think that we do need to start using the most fuel efficient vehicles we can practically afford and get by on. We need to explore more fuel efficient engines and finding alternative sources to petroleum. The government should pass a law regarding fuel efficiency, say, 20 to 25 mpg with SUVs, vans, and large vehicles, and 35 mpg with small cars. Necessity is the mother of technology.

As far as those truckers, they should take their proposed bill to Washington, and then stop driving until their shippers start paying them more for the additional cost of fuel. If they could get some trucking companies to join them, they would have a lot of clout, especially once they stopped driving and everybody needed them to ship things.

There is one thing we can't do, and that's change the foreign demand for oil. China's increasing automobile industry is partly responsible for driving oil to record prices.

what i love is all these people bltching about the war in iraq because all we're there for is for oil...well if that were the case, dont ya think the gas prices would be ALOT lower? clearly we didnt go there for oil!

i was serious about that last post, a general strike would really give it to them, and force them to lower gas prices
