Paterno's Salary
Re: Paterno's Salary
When you pay your income tax, do you really know what YOUR dollars are spent for? NO. So when money is given to PSU by the taxpayers, how can Penn State say that NO taxpayer money goes to Joe?
Regardless, it is public money paying for Joe's salary, whether it is by tax dollars, or by ticket sales. Either way, the public has a right to know.
With that logic, every ma and pa retail shop that's privately held would have to disclose their salary. Doesn't all their dollars come from the public?
And with that logic, shouldn't we know what every single teacher makes and not just the administrators? What about every single PennDOT worker leaning on those shovels?
Disclosing someone's salary is bad business, regardless of the type of business. It creates animosity among those employed by that business. Why do you think most companies have a policy against revealing your salary to other employees?
I don't care if it's JoePA or Dave Wannstadt, I'm against it because it sets a bad precedence.

Re: Paterno's Salary
I'm sure that the public can find out what Penn Dot workers make if they want to. Just call and ask what a certain job pays. Also, I'll bet they can find out teachers salaries too. BUT private individuals, such as those running Mom and Pop grocery stores, have private salaries. They receive NO money from the state or federal government toward their salary, therefore are NOT accountable to the public for what they make.

Because none does, the people attending the stadium solely for the "Atmosphere" do

Of course Mom and Pop grocery stores don't have to disclose their salaries. That was in response to H&H saying that if Paterno's salary isn't paid from state grants, it's paid from ticket sales which come from the public, so they have a right to know.
I was simply stating that just because someone's salary is paid for by a private transacation (which a ticket sale is), it doesn't mean their salary has to be published for the world to see.
As for the PennDOT workers, do you really think that if you called and asked what a certain position pays, you'll automatically know what each individual PennDOT worker makes? Same as teachers. Think about it.

Re: Paterno's Salary
Call PennDot and ask what a certain position makes per hour. Then find out what a certain person's position is. Put 2 and 2 together and you will know what they make per hour. Allow for some overtime and you will get an approximation of what a person makes per year. Now does Paterno make $250,000 per year, or $1 million per year. How do we know, or how do we make a rough estimate???? You can't. It's hidden. It's a secret.... As far as teachers are concerned, I can go into the business office at FH and simply ask "What does a teacher with a bachelor's degree on step 3 make?" They will tell me. Again, put 2 and 2 together and........ But if you go to PSU and ask what does a head football coach make at PSU, you will get NO answer. IT'S A SECRET!!!!!!
