Look. If someone from Cambria Heights or Richland or even Central had 111 tackles in 6 games, I might buy it. After all, how many times does their offense go 3 and out. Some of these schools might play 2/3rds of their games on defense. But a team that has gone 6-0 since a kid has started to play and he has 111 tackles is a stretch if you ask me. You guys must count jumping on the pile.

How do they keep stats in the NFL? Solo's and assisted. I guess you're going to start saying Hickey doesn't have 11 sacks on the year?

Good information on the tackle thing. I was an official football stat tracker for the university I attended (I know I did it all right?).

Officially, tackles should only be given to the person who actually makes the tackle on the player. Therefore, it is very, very rare that assists should be given. When two people hit a ball carrier, only the person who makes first contact should be credited for the tackle. I actually was under the microscope for keeping stats and had to be evaluated a few times because the team I was evaluating had the best linebacker in the nation and was up for the Harlin Hill trophy (equivilent to the heisman at D2).

In the stat world, stats like Bedford are not considered valid, because so many half tackles are given. I mean Bedford has something like 8 or nine players averages over 7 tackles a game. That stat alone loses the teams credibilty of the stats.

But, yes it does depend on the stat keeper. And this stuff happens at the college level too.

personally, i would rather be in a program like Bedford's that rewards players that are in on EVERY play some how, and no they don't give you an assist for jumping on the pile. I think that only giving credit for the solo tackle doesn't make much sense. Isn't it bad to rob a kid of a tackle just because he wasn't the 1st person to stand him up? If the runner is still trying to gain yardage and another teammate comes in and finishes off the job, that's a tackle. and if on every play someone has to be given the tackle on the play, if only solo tackles are given then who gets it if 2 guys hit him at exactly the same time?? A solo tackle system is always screwing someone while an assisted tackle system rewards players who make sure they're in on the play.

Nope, it isn't a tackle if the guy who hit him first would of made the tackle on his own. And that is the case 90% of the time.

Assits should be given only if:
1) two players hit the ball carrier at exactly the same time.
2) A player hit a ball carrier, is being drug by the ball carrier, and another player finishes him off. But only if the ball carrier would of not been tackled if it would of not been for the second player making contact.

You can see how there is a lot of judgement here. But when it is blow out of proportion like in Bedfords case, it gets a little ridiculous.

Call any SID (Sports Information Director) at any college. They'll tell you the same thing.

Very good post Opinionguy! I did not now that. I think they are guilty of the assist bug too. No way should someone have that many tackles(unless PSU, MSU, Texas, and others are looking at him for a full ride). Anyway, thanks for that chunk of useless info that I love so much.

I'm not knocking the kid at all...just showing how stats can differ. I'm sure he is a heck of a linebacker.

Statistics aside, Bedford's defense became a major strength starting with the 3rd game with Hyatt at MLB.

Lies, damned lies, statistics.
