Re: If we go to 8A
I question why this topic is even in question. Sure its nice to think about something new, but having 4 champions is enough, heck Id like to see(if there was a change) the 4A play the 3A and the 2A play the 1A if were talking about mixing things up. The system is fine as is. If you start making this an issue on numbers and making sure everything is "fair" I actually agree with opinion guy in saying the PIAA should join with the AYSO

McCort's enrollment in 186 they choose to play up to 2A.
Most states with less schools have as many or more classes than PA. I think the real advantage of 8 classes would be a more even distribution of teams in each class across the state and shorten the season in football without sacrificing the number of teams in the playoffs.

Re: If we go to 8A
Indiana has 5 classes with about 60 schools per class. If we had 8 classes we would have about 70 schools per class.
Its all in how you look at it. Watered down? Heck why not just go back to the good ole A and B groups!

Re: If we go to 8A
Texas might have only 5 classes and I don't know how many per class. But I do know that there are over 100 high schools in TX that play 6-man football which there isn't a version of in PA.
I think it would be interesting if the PIAA would explore some of the smaller schools implementing 6 or 8 man football such as Turkeyfoot and Williamsburg in our area or maybe some schools that don't have football like Forbes Road or Harmony could field a team at much less cost!

Right now with 4 classes this area District 5/6 suffers:
AAAA- Not enough teams to even have a playoff
AAA- Probably the weakest field in the state
AA- 3 different teams have accounted for 95% of the titles over the past 17 years
A- Um...Windber...mix in another team every 4th year...then we have BC...mix in Bellwood every fourth year.
Now we want 8 champions? C'mon. It looks like Tyrone would fall inbetween McCort and FH's class...meaning they wouldn't have a game within 50 points until state playoffs.
8 classes would be a complete joke.
