I've known good people who have used unemployment as a springboard to get back on their feet. I've seen people use disability to be able to pay their bills in the face of a freak accident. Yes, people abuse welfare, but far more people use it for the purpose it was intended. Many senior citizens struggle with the cost of medications, but can you imagine the burden it would be without Medicare? We're all just one freak accident or serious illness away from needing help.
I see no problem with the government helping out someone either when they fall upon hard times.

There's a BIG difference between unemployment and welfare. Huge. Recipients of unemployment have paid into it - like an insurance. Welfare is totally free for the recipient.

I'm not against welfare to give someone a needed boost to get back on their feet. But far too often, you see the people perfectly able to work, "getting their check", or having more kids to get a raise. I guess the difference is that you believe those type of welfare recipients are the minority, and many of us believe that situation is more the norm.

Again, with Medicare, sort of like Social Security. You pay into it while you're working, reap the benefits when you can't work. Not the same as welfare. Problem is, our elected officials (R's and D's alike) have bankrupted those programs.

southy, you're right. Bush was a really good President. No doubt. That's why he is leaving office with the lowest approval rating ever. Don't point fingers at other people when you voted for him twice. Not once, but twice. Lame duck or not; the man did very little while he was in office. He did leave us with one good thing...the ability to make jokes about him.

"This thaw -- took a while to thaw, it's going to take a while to unthaw." --George W. Bush, on liquidity in the markets, Alexandria, La., Oct. 20, 2008
"First of all, I don't see America having problems." --George W. Bush, interview with Bob Costas at the 2008 Olympics, Beijing, China, Aug. 10, 2008
"I'm coming as the president of a friend, and I'm coming as a sportsman." --George W. Bush, on his trip to the Olympics in China, Washington, D.C., July 30, 2008

AND MY FAVORITE...
"There's no question about it. Wall Street got drunk -- that's one of the reasons I asked you to turn off the TV cameras -- it got drunk and now it's got a hangover. The question is how long will it sober up and not try to do all these fancy financial instruments." --George W. Bush, speaking at a private fundraiser, Houston, Texas, July 18, 2008

More revisionist history from the wacko-libs. I believe that Harry Truman and Jimmy Carter both had lower approval ratings. I know Truman did for sure. Make fun of Bush all you want. Your pick (Remember in four years who you voted for) The Obaminator/Sinless/The Anti-Christ/12th Imam all rolled into one hasn't even been sworn in yet and the Stock Market has tanked over 1500 points. Wow some wave of change we can believe in to ride into the WH! Way to go Mr. Hope and Change! Way to inspire the brokers to buy into your future presidency. What a joke! What's even a bigger joke is the OPM isn't saying its his fault. Which of course it is.

Obama lied! I lost 15% in my IRA's the last two weeks. He said that if he got elected we would be in utopia! How dare he lie to us! Is he still going to buy my gas and pay my mortgage?
