Re: FERNDALE
Don't get me wrong. I'm not blasting coach Glennon. I'm sure he knows a lot more about football than I do or ever will. The point I'm trying to make about the coaching goes way beyond the head coach. When I say football is coaching intensive I am referring to the overall package. A head coach, IMO, is simply a CEO who directs and oversees the whole operation. A lot of coaching in football falls upon the the coordinators and the position coaches. Good fundamentals much be taught along with execution. The x's & o's must be followed within the head coaches philosophy. Also speed development and strength training in the off season is very important in developing a program that will sustain success over a long period of time. Finally, if there are no athletes to accomplish all this, then obviously success will be limited. I do believe that Westmont has good talent.
With all that being said, it appears that Coach Glennon is grooming his program for the long run by developing his younger players - at least I hope. Everyone should be patient and remember that Bailey at Richland didn't have immediate success.

It is very easy to sit in the stands and second guess every move a coach makes; especially when your team is not winning. However, for every person that has the time to come on to message boards such as this, and complain that the coaches "suck", I suggest that when these jobs open up, submit your application, interview, get hired, and put your grand plans into place. Don't make excuses such as: 1) I would, but my job won't allow me to, 2) I just don't have the time, or the best of all, 3) I really don't have a clue how to coach, I just know how to tell those that do how to do it better!!! If you don't have the guts to get out there and do it yourself, or you don't have the internal drive to put in the ungodly amount of time that it takes to run a program ( or the fortitude to deal with parents that all think their kid is getting a D-1 scholarship!), then shut the heck up!!! Put your money where your mouth is. If you really think that the coaches at Ferndale, (or CH, or anywhere else, for that matter,) are that bad, then take over the program and show everyone how it is done!!!

Level, you're probably right, but if everyone heeded your advice, then Bleachercoaches would be a wimpy worthless site. The "fun" with Bleachercoaches is that fans get to voice their opion no matter how controversial. It's when name calling and personal attacks on character occur that the true meaning of this site is lost.

Penna Jr is turning the program around. Remember when he first got hired and the article in the paper said that he went door to door to get kids to play? Maybe after this season he can start knocking on doors of kids who live in other school districts to turn the program around even more??? After all, he can tell them that they have never lost to a Maryland team. That should get hundreds of more kids to play.
And, is there any word on why Penna Sr isn't around anymore? He hasn't been at a game since the Mighty Yellow Jackets played Windber.

Great couple of posts.
If you've really followed Westmont Football for a while you know they have a once proud tradition. The problems there run way deeper than coaching. A lot of the things Coach Glennon is doing are the right things. I'll be interested to see how this year's Sophomore class produces as Seniors before I'll pass judgement. Although this guy does do a lot of good football stuff, he's got to figure out a way to be more friendly toward his community to get Westy Pride back and get back player morale.

And the last thing I must tell you...NEVER QUIT!

opinionguy,
Please explain to this board exactly what the Westmont "once proud tradition" is??? If you are talking about their tradition of running off good coaches and great human beings -- I'll give you that. Fetzer, Skowron, Warner, Crissafulli -- now some of these idiots are going after their current football coach. Ya, some proud tradition.
You reap what you sow. The truth of this saying has never been so evident as with the Westmont athletic programs today.

This post could be applied to a couple of threads on here. ON BAD TEAMS THE COACHES DON'T SUCK. THEY MIGHT BE JERKS, BUT THEY DON'T SUCK. The players just aren't very good. The parents who try to blame everything on the coaches and not the kids are the ones who suck. Its the same at every school that has a lousy team. Ever try teaching something to a kid who is either too slow, too small, uncoordinated, or just plain stupid? (times 30) Then you haven't tried coaching.
EVERY PARENT WHO YELLS AT THE COACH SHOULD BE YELLING AT THE KIDS TO WORK HARDER IN PRACTICE AND IN THE WEIGHT ROOM. SAME GOES FOR THOSE WHO **** THAT THEIR KIDS AREN'T PLAYING. Why isn't he playing? Because he isn't any good. Don't get mad at the coach who tries to run instead of trying to pass on third down. He is just trying to make the best decision he can... 'get stuffed with my small and slow offensive line, or get my quarterback killed with my small and slow offensive line. or try to pass with the kid who can't see over the line and throw the ball ten yards.'
Put McCorts coaches at Ferndale or Westmont and they don't win any games either. Put Westmont's and Ferndale's coaches at McCort and they will still kick your ****. When a team graduates a bunch of kids you say they will be a down year because the good kids left. It has nothing to do with the Coach.
One final note - parents quit giving coaches advice. Instead, try asking them for some advice. Not only do they know more about football, they also know more about kids. You raise 2, maybe 3 kids. And you are an expert???? BFD. Coaches raise 20-50 kids a year on the football field. You are with them ten minutes a day, then they go to their room and play with their phones. Coaches are with them four hours a day and even longer. They know which kids are the brats, which kids listen, which kids are loyal, and which kids don't give a crap about the team. And they manage to get them on the field and play a game together without getting in fist fights when things go bad.
AND GUESS WHAT, I DON'T EVEN COACH.
