What year did you play in the Lantzy game and who was your coach that year? Just curious.

Portage won on an overtime decision to go for two. Gutsy call and it worked, but all this talk about who wanted it more, being outcoached and choking is a bit over the top.

Try to be a graceful winner.

Let's face it. Windber is not the Windber of old. No one else in the WestPAC is any good besides these 2 teams, so why is it a stretch to think they'll both be defeated until they meet?

Mustangs cap undefeated regular season....

By SHAWN B. CURTIS
The Tribune-Democrat
PORTAGE —
A simple sweep caused pandemonium at Portage Area Stadium on Friday night.

On an overtime, two-point conversion, Ryan Fuller carried the ball to the right corner of the end zone to give Portage a 22-21 victory over Windber, causing a wave of green and white to rush the field.

The victory clinched the WestPAC title for Portage (9-0), the program’s first since an Appalachian Conference South title in 1994, and sealed the first undefeated regular season since 1974.

“I played on the last undefeated team here in Portage,” Portage coach Gary Gouse said. “I wanted to pass this on to someone else and tonight I passed it on to this group.

“Aside from being married to a wonderful wife and having two great kids, I don’t know if there’s a better feeling.”

After battling to a 14-all tie in regulation, Windber wasted little time in taking the lead as quarterback Brad Dale found a sliding Mike Webb in the end zone. Dom Balash’s kick gave the Ramblers a 21-14 lead.

Portage took two plays to tally in its overtime possession. Wayne Gathers scored from a yard out. Gathers’ 8-yard run and an encroachment penalty set up the Mustangs’ score.

With the special teams unit on the field for the point-after, Gouse called a timeout.

“Our seniors wanted this game,” Gouse said. “During the timeout they said that they wanted to go for the win.”

Fuller’s conversion run started the celebration.

While the Mustangs and their faithful celebrated at one end of the field, Ramblers coach Phil DeMarco put things into perspective while addressing his charges.

“I told the kids to keep their heads up,” DeMarco said. “They finished 8-1 and had an excellent season. You can’t dwell on this, it’ll hurt for a couple of days but you have to get over it because we have district playoffs to look forward to.”

The Ramblers and Mustangs had similar successes on their opening drives as both squads used lengthy drives on their way to a score. Windber drew first blood thanks to an 11-play, 80-yard drive with Matt Andrascik plunging in from 3-yards out.

The Mustangs struck right back, marching 73 yards on nine plays with Gathers capping the drive from 4 yards out. A pair of reverses and a pass to Fuller moved the ball 36 yards on the possession.

The Ramblers took the lead again during the early stages of the second with a pass-interference penalty aiding the cause, putting the Ramblers on the Mustangs’ 15-yard line. Three plays later, Aaron Peterson stormed in from the 1 to close the drive.

Portage’s best opportunity to answer before the half fell short as Rick Biem’s 2-yard run was inches short of continuing a drive in Windber real estate.

Neither team could establish itself on offense in the third as Jason Mash and Josh Kotula registered drive-stopping sacks on Portage’s Dan Kowalczyk while Rousell returned the favor by dragging down Dale on a third-and-7 from the Windber 40.

“When you hold a team like Portage to 14 points in regulation, or when someone holds us to 14 in regulation, it’s a big deal,” DeMarco said. “Usually in big games like this the defense dominates and that’s what happened tonight.”

At the start of the fourth, Portage’s Jared Bilchak may have saved Portage’s hopes by picking off a Dale pass intended for Webb and returning it 15 yards to midfield.

A pass to Roger Walkovich (22 yards) and two rushes by Chris Willinsky (23 yards total) set up the equalizing tally as Gathers thundered in from the 5 with 9 minutes remaining.

Both squads had chances at another score, driving inside enemy territory with no success.

I think that the idea of calling the only time out you get in overtime, to ask your seniors,on senior night, what their decision would be, was amazing. It was a ballsy call. No one..wait, i should say NO ONE deserved to lose that game. It was definately apparent that both teams had respect for one another because it was one of the cleanest games i've seen all season.

Congrats to the Mustangs on the win.

Congrats to Windber on a great season.

Both teams, represent the West PAC well in the D6 and D5 playoffs.
The important thing is this, to be willing to sacrifice at any time what you are, for what you could become.

My apologies to anyone I've offended. Just know that your time is running short.
