Well, who are they going to hire?
Re: Well, who are they going to hire?
Schiano and Franklin are the two guys whose names are flying around that scare me.
Re: Well, who are they going to hire?
There was an insider from patriot news that tweeted that schiano is not wanted at PSU. Wonder what the truth to this is.

The insider you are referring to is David Jones. He was the man who wrote the o'brien / paterno fans article. He is fairly well connectedAoki12 wrote:There was an insider from patriot news that tweeted that schiano is not wanted at PSU. Wonder what the truth to this is.
Re: Well, who are they going to hire?
The only definite interview that I have heard of to this point is Larry Johnson Sr. At first, I thought this was just to appease the tenured coach but this slowly building some steam. I do NOT think he should be the next coach but he does have a fairly strong resume. Here is some reasons why he COULD be a good choice:
-Excellent recruiter. He single handedly brought the Baltimore, DC, Virginia pipeline to Penn State. For about 15 year (1998-2013) he, IMO was the only recruiter at Penn State. Joe wasn't recruiting, Galen Hall wasn't recruiting, Jay didn't have the work ethic to recruit, and Bradley was more of a coach than a recruiter.
-Experience. I'm not sure how long he's been on the staff or coaching in general but it has been a while. Though he doesn't thane head coaching or coordinator experience he did turn down coordinator jobs to stay in Happy Valley.
-He won't leave. If you are looking for stability, the only way Johnson will leave in the next 8-10 years is by underperformance.
-He would appease JoeBots. Let's not ignore the elephant in the room. They helping (although I think he was leaving either way) show BO'B the exit. Larry would be less scrutinized than a program outsider.
-Highly endorsed by current and former players. I've read several quotes by players of his that claim he would be a great HC. This could also help keep the players already at PSU from leaving.
-He is a good coach. He has produced NFL caliber dline talent as much as anyone in the country over the past 15 years.
Now I would say his chance of being the next HC is under 5% but I thought these points were worth noting. I think Penn State could hire worse.

That's why I thought it was pretty credible. I don't know about schiano. The possibilities are Johnson sr. Franklin and golden it seems. After reading up a little bit on schiano last night the penn state Fan in me wants him, but it seems like plenty of people are not for him, mainly because of his tenure at Tampa. Correct if I'm wrong but I don't think that's a good way to assess a coach.

Re: Well, who are they going to hire?
Those are great points apbk and I agree with most of them. But with that being said why would you not hire him considering all those are nearly exactly what you want inyour guy at the helm but you still say you "would NOT" hire him. Is there something subliminal I am missing? Does he have major flaws that outweigh all of those good things? Just curious apbkabpk2903 wrote:The only definite interview that I have heard of to this point is Larry Johnson Sr. At first, I thought this was just to appease the tenured coach but this slowly building some steam. Re: Well, who are they going to hire?
Why would I not hire him? Well, I didn't say that I wouldn't hire him. I said I don't think he should be the next coach. Here are a few reasons why I feel that way:
-Paterno baggage. He was on the staff during a lot of the time in question regarding Sandusky. He is lucky to be one of the 2 coaches to retain a coaching (any job at all, not just Penn State) from that staff. We still don't know what was known throughout the athletic department during this time. What if during trials it comes out that every person in that program knew Sandusky was raping children? If that's the case, Penn State has another self inflicted wound and would have to fire him. To be honest, it makes me nervous that he is on the staff and the interim head coach.
-I want an offensive mind. It was so refreshing at Penn State to have an offense that primary goal when it took the field was to score, not to just protect the ball and flip the field. I would rather see a offensive coach that keeps him as the defensive coordinator.
-Penn State needs this next coach to continue the separation from the "Paterno Era" to a new generation. For that reason, I would like to see them go outside of the Paterno coaching tree.
-I think they can find a better candidate than him. The athletic department claims they have had a lot of inquires from highly qualified candidates for the position.
-He can be kept without being HC. You can keep nearly all of the coaching talent this guy has in the program on the next staff as a defensive line coach or defensive coordinator.
Like I said though, he has a good resume and I hope they give him an honest interview.

Re: Well, who are they going to hire?
When I asked why you wouldn't hire him that's what I meant, for the head job. But anyways, I can see some of that. I agree they need an offensive mind. O'Brien was good with that, and it was especially seen in hackenberg this year. Can Johnson do that? With his experience and football brain probably, but it's not his forte. The only thing I disagree with is the paterno stuff. A lot of people are over it. A lot of people want to move on, including the victims, and I'm sure Larry Johnson Sr as well. Yes it was bad and an unfortunate thing but think about it, is it healthy for the university to turn down someone who is otherwise very qualified save for not even being involved? I don't think so. Yes there is a risk that he knows but that's knit picking and nothing has come to the surface yet.abpk2903 wrote:Why would I not hire him? Well, I didn't say that I wouldn't hire him. As for you saying there are better candidates out there, of course there are, but the university only has so much time to find those candidates. As for now, Johnson is the man in my book.
Re: Well, who are they going to hire?
You can't just ignore the scandal. I really don't know what to expect from the impending trials. It is a realistic possibility that someone goes on the stand and speaks of staff members that knew of some if Jerry's actions. It is also POSSIBLE that Larry Johnson could be mentioned during the trial. Can you imagine how the national media then runs with that headline if he is the HC at the time?
Re: Well, who are they going to hire?
Not ignoring the scandal at all, learning from it. It's over and guaranteed Johnson has taken advantage of it and learned from it but it almost seems like you think he is involved somehow. I'm not saying that you think that but I just don't see where you are coming from. I honestly respect you being cautious but I truly think its unnecessary considering nothing points to his involvement. Now when you said there being better candidates that is a great point, I just wonder where they will go. With schiano all but out of the picture who is there? Franklin? Golden?
