El-Moldo wrote:Even girls can play basketball. Seriously, what does basketball bring to the table for football players??? A little hand eye coordination? A little stamina when running?? Maybe soccer players should play basketball too. They run alot. Other than that, what else is there.
For what positions?? I know numerous athletes that received scholarships based off of college football coaches watching a prospect's hoop game. The coach that gave Geroy Simon his football scholarship to Maryland University said his football tape was ok but he watched his bball highlights of him making explosive dunks and jtown and became a have to have WR. Actually I would say bball is a better sport to play to translate into football. For one it takes footwork to play defense teamed with stamina and explosive movements. If your in the trenches it is good to build a nastry attitude. But if you already play with a chip on your shoulder then footwork is more important. There was a D Lineman I used to coach that could dunk off a hop step he is 6'2 280 and he averaged 15points and 10 rebounds a game in HS. He is a NFL prospect based off of the scouts knowing that it takes a gifted athlete to be that big and to move so gracefully. Why do you think Julius Peppers is the best pass rusher in the game?? Because he is leaps and bounds more agile and athletic than his OL counterparts. Also Scott Lewis is a good LB who already plays with a chip but he definitely has more athletic ability with his movements than any LB that has come out of the area in some time.

Team sports- YOU pick which one. Everyone that plays sooner or later makes mistakes, errors, whatever, but for the most part, your TEAMMATES are there covering your A##. Wrestling: Mano-a mano. You make a mistake, it's PIN time. Match over. Did any of you who think it's "gay" go to a match or 2 and see how many attractive young ladies are in attendance? I'm just sayin. Maybe THEY know a lot more than you do, but how many guys go to school dances to look at / hang with girls, but the dudes don't dance? At least that's the way it used to go down. I forgot this is the XBOX generation. FYI- Davey (Squints) Mehall -DID- wrestle his Sr. year- FH needed someone at Hvywt. to avoid forfeits at that spot, and a couple of his football buddies talked him into going out to wrestle. He maybe lasted a half dozen matches, but at least he tried. And about Shawn Lewis- ask him sometime who one of the toughest opponents he ever faced, and a lifelong friend who could chew him a new one without trying if he wanted- Artie Moss. Defensive End on the football team and state qualifying wrestler soaking wet at 140-145 lbs. Fast on his feet, long gangly arms, intense disposition. Great attributes for football and wrestling. There are many, many more young athletes just like this. One sport definitely DOES work well for the athlete in the other sport.
It ain't over until it's over.

Artie is an Animal. hahaha. I have many friends who wrestled/wrestle. I just don't like it personally, and not many of them played football.

So oldcollegecoach/ath said, "I would say B-ball is a better sport to play to translate into football". I would encourage him, and everyone else out there, to read the following and check out the long list at the bottom of the article. Maybe you will change your mind.

I guess it depends on the different positions in football.

Wide Receivers, Tight Ends playing Basketball. Way more beneficial then wrestling. Watch any good receiver, they box out the defenders. basketball is a lot about position, and it teaches receivers how to gain position.

I think Pitt football had 5 guys with Division 1 Basketball offers. Thats why Antonio Gates could go into football with such an easy transition.

Antonio Gates is an exception to the rule. Did you even see that list. Roddy White and others were great wrestlers. It just doesn't help linemen only. Tiki Barber and his brother are just examples of football players who weren't linemen and benefitted from years of high school wrestling. And again, football players can play basketball, but can they wrestle if they never did in high school. And the example of Scott Lewis beating any wrestler locally from our past is a joke. Strength will only get you so far.

I didn't say beat then in a fight, In football and he didn't wrestle. I'll still take Scott over most, but that wasn't the point I was trying to convey.

There is way more to wrestling than being strong or tough. Scott would have MORE choices after high school if he would have wrestled. B-ball did him NO good, as far as football was concerned.
