MLB Trade Deadline Thursday at 4:00 PM
Re: MLB Trade Deadline Thursday at 4:00 PM
I have said for years that the trade deadline is the worst time of the year to make roster upgrades. This "deadline" causes a sellers market and in return usually burns the teams that grasp for straws and overpay for players.
IMO the trade deadline is what cost Ray Shero his job in hockey. He would trade away top picks and prospects every year and now the pens have the thinnest pipeline they've had since the early 2000s.
MLB fans are seeing why shaking up the roster on July 31st doesn't mean you are in better position down the stretch:
-A's: In first place and the highest flying offense in baseball at the trade deadline, went out and got Samardzjia, Hammel, Lester, and Gomes. 6 weeks later they have been eliminated from contention in the AL west and are hanging on to the wild card spot.
-Tigers: Also in first place, they made a move and got Price to be what they were calling their 4th ace. He unfortunately has pitched more like a spot starter and his inconsistency has assisted in the Tigers now trailing the Royals in the AL Central.
-Cardinals: St. Louis were one of the worst hitting teams in baseball and their slugging catcher was on the DL. Yet they still decided to trade away one of their more feared bats (Craig) in the middle of the lineup. In return, they got Peavy and Ina separate deal they acquired Masterson. The Cards have overtaken the Brewers for 1st place and seem to be on their way to a NL Central title but it's in spite of Peavy and Masterson. Peavy's fastball velocity has dipped more than 4 mph since the deal and Masterson has had some disastrous outings.

Peavy went to the Giants. You're thinking of Lackey.

The Brew Crew ain't the same team that started at 20-2. That's the main reason the Cards are in 1st. They haven't slipped as bad.
It ain't over until it's over.

The Cards made their run when Yadier Molina got back into the lineup. He's their big bat and best defensive player, I don't think the two pitchers made much of a difference.
