Memo to Hollywood.

What are your goals?

Do you intend to coach?

If so, why?

WHat do you hope to get out of coaching?

Think of how many great coaches came from modest circumstances. Years ago I was at a basketball conference near DC and both main speakers, Hubie Brown and Morgan Wooten, emphasized the importance of sound early coaches in every athlete's upbringing. I remember later standing in line getting something to eat and HB nodded hello and then asked me what I did. When I told him I was a junior high coach, his face brightened and we spoke for a few minutes. Obviously I was thrilled, but what's important is that for that short period of time he treated me as if I were special even though I was just a chump from Podunk High. Later I told the varsity coach how Hubie had actually made me feel important. The coach listened and responded: "Hell, you are important!"

All those guys and gals who coach and who have no higher aspirations than to give something to the kids -- they're the special ones.

I played for and coached with a great man, Royce Waltman. Yet guys like Sonny Close and John Waltman and Jim Hostetler and Bob Baker and a half dozen others were every bit as great in their own way -- and I'm sure Waltman would agree. Every great coach would agree.

Foghorn, you are more than a chump from podunk high.

Well stated reasoning for wanting to coach. It is all about the people you are coaching and not about you.

The more you give the more you will receive.

hollywood i have no problem saying ur a bad coach, even tho uve never done it, and heres y....
u say u want to be at a college, so that the maturity and talent will already be there, basically all ur saying is ur a glorified babysitter, a coach is a person that MAKES TALENT! u dont want to coach high schoolers because u know u cant teach them how to be good, u want a program thats already established so that u can live of its past success, well guess what, that makes u a bad coach!

How in the world can you guys judge anyone? Do you know what good is? I can make players do things that it is impossible for HS kids from this area to do, so yes gunner you need talent to win many games and championships!! I could coach at any level I want to. I have many goals in life and don't need to come on a board and discuss them with you guys.

We know how to at least recognize and judge an egomaniac.

I may not have been a major D1 athlete like Holly, but I coached football, cross country, track, and basketball at the elementary, frosh, and varsity levels at a AAAA school district in suburban Philly. Not a broad experience, but I got a taste of pretty much the best athletics that PA has to offer (Yes, District 1 is better than the vaunted WPIAL in just about any AAAA sport!). I used to prepare scouting reports for our varsity coach about a hoops team that played in our section...That team was led by Kobe Bryant. Well, on the other hand, Kobe surely wasn't as good as Hollywood...and that's the same thing as me coaching junior high hoops at Fannett-Metal and preparing scouting reports on how to stop the great Nasty boys, right?

I am curious: What "things" can Hollywood make HS kids from "this area" do that makes your coaching so special and sets you apart from the "rubes" that currently coach at "lowly" places like Central and Northern Bedford? I'd like an honest answer.

I also have a question: What level will Hollywood be coaching at next season, Hollywood? I'd be curious to hear. Most of the football staffs at all levels HS through NFL have surely filled their openings by now. Has any HS "power program" or D1 juggernaut been fortunate enough to secure your vaulable services yet?

I heard that the Johnstown Jackals of the indoor football league have an opening. Maybe Holly could be a player/coach?

Maybe the Jackals would suit Hollywood better. I coached a very successful SemiPro team in the NAFL. Those guys new how to play already, I had to do very little teaching of football, just work on refining some skills and drawing up schemes. Coaching at the higher levels looks like what Hollywood wants, but he is not willing to pay the price and work towards it.
Hey Hollywood, listen to some of these guys. Work your way up. Learn to teach skills. Build a resume. It will only make you a better coach. Someone already said it, Coaching is a marathon, not a sprint. A coach may have connections to get him to a higher level, but if you can't do the job you won't be there long. I have witnessed it time and time again, from kids your age who came from programs like you have come through. You may think you are ready for the NFL, but when it comes down to brass tacks, do you have the skills and coaching experience? If you look into the CHS situation, that may have been you biggest fault.
Goals
It is best to avoid standing directly between a competitive jerk and his goals.
Regret
It hurts when you make mistakes-but when they're big enough, the pain only lasts a second.
Stupidity
Quitters never win, Winners never quit. But those who never win and never quit are IDIOTS!

Read your posts with a clear and open mind...it isn't too hard to make judgements.

I know who and who not to take advice from. I will not take advice from a board that says bleachercoaches. I get on here to have fun and get people fired up and boy does it work. Every time I post, many, many people respond so I must have their interest!!
