Head Roadie: So you DO, then, disagree with coach, that being 6'6" would be an increased scoring advantage, like the 3-point shot rule is/was, right?
Re: Famous Alumni
The local rag reported this morning that CV's Blake Furman broke a 31 year old CV scoring record, with 54 points against Turkeyfoot. So, look at the competition. Also, look at the fact he did NOT hit one 3 pt. shot.

Yes El Moldo, I do disagree with the "height thing" being an advantage....you could twist this argument all over the place....Titan brings up a good point about the mercy rule but that only applies to current day scorers....some of the predecessors to AJ wouldn't have had mercy rule advantages either. Bottom line is you have to go by the rules of the day as they change. If they had a 3 pt shot when Tom McMillen played (2nd all-time) AJ would still be the state scoring leader. And I think he outpointed any other 3-pt shooters pre 1987 by enough that nobody else would have scored more either so I don't buy the 3-pt advantage theory either.
As for the competition difference....ok....then have the all-time top Class A thru AAAA scorers I guess....This whole thing can be twisted a zillion different ways, end result...AJ scored more points than any other player in state history playing under the guidelines and rules of the times.

3,833 points is a ton of points. I haven't scored that many points in my entire life even if I count baskets made in shooting drills and pickup games in my driveway.

Re: Famous Alumni
Yes, but once the 3-point shot was instituted, the PRIZE (3 points with one shot) was out there, so kids started shooting from farther out. So the whole offensive philosophy in basketball changed. So the 3-point shot DID increase the ability to score more points.
Re: Famous Alumni
The 3 point shot is not as high of a percentage shot either. Sure it was there but you better be a good shooter. If you are 6'10" and playing in the paint against someone 6'2" you are at a big advantage too. I'm done with this argument and interested in finding out about more locals who have done big things.

Is it true that Vince McMahon grew up in this area?

His mom lived in Ebensburg and loved tennis, which is why the courts are there now
Re: Famous Alumni
I have to stick up for the old school guys. Rules nowadays have changed, for sure, but as mentioned, I've witnessed a LOT of great shooters in my time. There was no arc painted on the floor back then, but the same basic defenses were there. They still had 5 guys on D. Presses, different zones, tight M2M. The size of the court hasn't changed either. I'm just saying, if the old shooters had the same arc, they would be right there with the newer guys like AJ. This is fun to speculate, kind of like who would win a fight between Ali or Marciano or Lewis. Joe, not Lennox!
It ain't over until it's over.
