I disagree with wolverine. He said that speed can only come into play after the runner breaks through the defense. Speed come into play as soon as the ball carrier gets the ball. If the hole is small and closes quickly a back with speed can get through the hole but a slower back will have the hole close on him and get a minimal gain.

Speed is not just used in the open field. Its speed through the hole that makes for a big gain.

Power football, when Bedford has needed power, come right at you and smack you in the mouth football, they have turned to Mike Young, and he has contributed in ways that many wouldn't think possible. In 4 games he has at least 2 that are over 100 and less than 10 carries each time, and last week against PC, he had 2 tds and 95 yards in maybe 8 carries at the most. When the D is playing outside, then give the ball to Mike up the middle, this has been the scheme all year and ride the horse that got you there. CC will have a hard time scoring on this Bison Defense also. They are tackling hard, finish plays and most importantly FINISHING GAMES...

But I don't think it makes the other team's assignment any easier with Shane Fox and some of those other guys out there as well.
But you are right Gunner, that the main three guys any defense has to worry about are the Harris brothers and John Marshall. Is Josh Marshall playing football for Bedford?

Yes he is but was hampered with an injury in the early going of the season. With Bedfords secondary playing as well it is at the present, Mesaros will not find the sledding through the air all that easy (haha sleding through the air like he is a reindeer). This will without a doubt be the best game in Ebensburg in a long time, I think history will repeat its self here, going back to the 2002 season... I think we all remember that game in the mud...

Obviously speed kills....look at Miami's stiffling defense...they always have speed...LSU and USC's championship seasons last year...they both had speed...size is a definate advantage though if you have good technique and move...i wouldn't want a bigger kid over a smaller quicker kid...nor would i want a smaller quicker kid over a bigger kid...i would want a combination of both...but as far as the skill positions like wide reciever and defensive backs go speed is a killer!
The winner ain't always the one with the fastest car....it's the one who refuses to lose!Image

Troy Harris and John Marshall were faster than any player CC put on the field last year and between the 2 games the score was a combined 82-26 including a shutout victory in the playoffs.

Everyone is talking about the Bedford offense and how CC will stop it. But what about the CC offense? In the Altoona Mirror they were the #3 offense in the area scoring 41.7 or so per game. Both defenses are equal in terms of scoring offense ( CC= 12 ppg given up and BED= 13 ppg given up).

So before you hand bedford the offensive edge, please take a look at the stats.

And if speed was the #1 thing in all of football then don't you think NFL teams would turn to the Olympic sprinters to play WR and Tailback for them? Sure speed is good, but you need much more than that to win a football game.

speaking of speed and size, anyone remember Damien Crissey of Bedford from a couple years back? that kid was definetly big, but he ran the 100m dash and 4X100 during track season! the kid was in some eyes a perfect recruit, big, strong, and FAST!
