Re: 2012-2013 Enrollment
I think the poor blue pirates would get carved up several ways. Some to Central, Hollidaysburg, JV and Tyrone. I had heard a rumor the williamsburg was going to coop with JV in football since both school enrollments had dropped.
One thing about rivals consolidating. My dad told me once that everyone thought that the Boswell/Forbes merger would create a football powerhouse as both schools by themselves were good programs as were the saxton-liberty/robertsdale programs. Afther the merger both Tussey and North Star have not been known for great football programs that the merged schools that make them up were.
A tyrone-bellwood merger...Northern Blair Polar Bears has a nice ring to it.

That is very true, but for the most part they are only rivals when they play each other. The rest of the season the fans and athletes will root for each other to go as far as possible. When I attended the D-6 championship games this year at Mansion Park, I do believe the Tyrone and Bellwood fans along with students were in equal numbers at both events, but I can see your thought also.
As for the bolar bears?! Come on you can come up with somthing a little better! haha

I think the best fit for the town of Williamsburg itself would be Central. Not a bad drive at all, like 7 miles.
You can't always judge how good a football team would be when schools merge based on how they were before. Look at the examples above. Also, I believe the two schools that formed Southern Huntingdon, Orbisonia and ?, were both awful football teams. Then the two went together and look at the powerhouse the Rockets were for a long time.

SouthPaw you are right on buddy and we will see this happen very soon ~ consolidation will create competition across the board at all levels within the education system that most levels within the education system can not accept due to the fear of competiton ~ it is a business and needs to be run like a business since the output is education of your children and providing opportunties for them to succed in life or against others to survive / excel once they are prepared for life (academics, athletics, musical, drama, vo-tech skills, etc.) ~ remember cream rises to the top so let's apply it across the board ~ just like running a business and not a politcal machine ~ SouthPaw they may throw you out of your union from your view point if your not careful but you would rise straight to the top in my eyes (I will hire you in my business as a chemist)!

Re: 2012-2013 Enrollment
That's the problem schools, SS, turnpike, post office and soon to be health care just to name a few are not ran as a business. Anytime the government has a say in a business situation its going to lose money and we the tax payers are going to makeup the difference. Doesn't matter how many schools combine they will still lose money.
The government has no bottom line they do not have to make money unlike a real business.

IMO- Education should be run by government- the state government.
I fear that when Education becomes a business our children will be seen as simply dollar signs. It is happening already in Charter Schools.
The corporations or owners will not care about the finish product but only about making money.
You will have "teachers" paid minimum wage an hour.
No money will be spent on outside resources such as technology or textbooks.
The children will be pushed through a system regardless of outcomes.
The American Tycoon-Monopoly- Businessmen are what are ruining the country.
Welcome to Walmart Educational Academy.
Welcome to the Fannie Mae School of Learning.
Welcome to the Enron School for Business.
The parents will be sucked dry and will have NO SAY on how money is spent or how the process of education is being done.
I would take a School Board over a "Board of Directors" any day...
At least now our children stand a chance.

In theory school being a business would be great- but look at the people in this country.

I still haven't been informed on the educational value of basketball or football.
I also haven't read many concrete ideas on actually cutting costs in the public school system.
As for teachers making minimum wage under a business setting that could be true simply because there is a great supply of teachers. Under a business setting math and science teachers would likely make a lot more money than English and history teachers.
I would consolidate a few schools.
I would eliminate Pre-K programs for three and four year olds. I would return kindergarten to a half day program.
Now the real question is do we need twelve grades of school. Are we achieving in twelve years what we could achieve in ten? I think so. The obvious problem is what do 16 year olds do once they graduate and are still not considered to be adults for another 2-5 years?

CRBL, are you from Bedford County too?
What I have found from living both in Bedford County and over here is handout city aka Johnstown, is that , GENERALLY SPEAKING, there are two different classes of people inhabiting the two places. In Johnstown, people tend to make more money but have been, for the most part, infected by the sloth, waste and political corruption that has enveloped the region as federal and state government handouts constitute 80% of the money that flows into the area. This gives rise to the Johnstown Mentality where people would prefer to see you lose or fail, than succede or win -- even with their own -- like they did with a poor kid from Hornerstown last Congressional election. The democrap party ran attack ads against him calling him "The Millionaire Tim Burns". This played right into the hands of the local populace and he got killed. Many people in Johnstown felt good. But now it is backfiring on them as redistricting now has republicans outnumbering democraps by 5000. Critz is gone and Johnstown will be left with no local Congressional connection for the first time in 60 years. This is just one example of how small mindedness and jealousy continue to destroy the area.
In Bedford county you still have some low lifes but they tend to be marginalized, not mainstreamed. People generally do not make as much money as in Johnstown but they tend to work, to be independent, help each other and have at least some sense of community. They are definately a different class of people. Old fashion values -- work, responsibility, accountability, making do with what you have -- seem to be engrained there. Maybe its because Bud Shuster did not run around handing out sacks of money. I don't know but it is different for sure.

Re: 2012-2013 Enrollment
Some good points here. 1/2 Kgarden I agree with. Math/Science teachers making more would make sense as there is a shortage of both and elementary would make the least as there is an over supply of them. But the union won't allow that as it is made up of 2/3 elementary teachers! (I have this arugment with my wife all the time she teaches Kgarden)knowitall wrote:I still haven't been informed on the educational value of basketball or football.

Re: 2012-2013 Enrollment
Its tough to run a school like a business...with all the gov't mandates. Let the schools have true local control with a local (county wide) school board and you would see a major difference. Parents need to be held accountable as well as admin/teachers. Way too many kids have parents looking to scam the system to get a free ride for their kids.
