The Quips

Post by Crimson09Crazy »

Good read in Sports Illustrated this week. 10 page article on the town, the rough streets, and the illustrious football history of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania.

Its amazing to me how a tiny A school puts more Division I athletes, NFL players, and turns in more success then schools 100 times their size. By far the most impressive school in Western Pennsylvania. IMO.

While I do consider the athletic accomplishments of The Quips to be quite impressive, I would insist that when stating they are by far the best school in Western PA that you include the words " in athletics". This is a struggling academic school.

Math -13%

Not to tear them down but academics and athletics are a balancing act and aliquippa is great athletically but not near to being a successful school in academically. In the end aren't the combination what makes a great school.

Just to change the whole dynamic of the topic, Tyrone has always tested near the best in PA in those infamous PSSA scores, but how many millionares have they produced? If your school wastes 70% of their time practicing for the PSSA's to score great and get more funding, and your daughter is a National Honor Society Member(mine), and she has no idea what the Panama Canal is in 9th grade(yeah no sh!t) what good is it doing? I'll take the quips results with a few "getting the heck outta Ambridge" anyday.

The last time I was in Aliquippa was for a WPIAL quarterfinal game back in 2001. Our team bus received a 3 unit police escort from the town limit to the HS gym and then back out of town following the game. The Aliquippa police escorted the team to and from the bus/locker room and 3 officers protected the team bench during the game. The amazing thing was, we werent even playing Aliquippa.

The main street of the town looks like those clips you see on the news from Bosnia or Afghanistan, only the only folks you see are a few shady characters standing on the corners. If I was driving through that town, I would run every red light. It's as bad as it gets. Actually, it's amazing that they have that many students proficient on the PSSA...

With that said, Aliquippa has produced some unbelievable FOOTBALL athletes over the past several decades. Interstingly enough, they've produced very few D1 basketball players. Mark GIlbert (DuquesneU) and Herb Pope (SHall) are the only ones who comes to mind. Sure, Revis, Baldwin, Lay, Law, Sean Gilbert, and a few others could have played D1 college basketball had they chosen to.

What happened to Antonio Redic? He averaged 20 along with Pope and Baldwin on that team that came in second the other year.
