Probable 2004-05 PIAA Playoff Brackets

Post by Head Roadie »

*This is not finalized...PIAA will formally adopt, with some possible "tweaking" in May.

Class "A"

Weeks 10,11,12 District 6 Playoffs with 8 teams
Weeks 9, 10, 11,12 WPIAL Playoffs (WPIAL teams are permitted to start regular season games one week earlier--date of D5/6 second scrimmages)
Weeks 10?, 11,12 District 5 Playoffs with 4 or 6 teams (To be determined--Leaning toward 6)

Week 12 Preliminary Round State Playoffs

2-1 vs 4-1 and 1-1 vs 11-1 ...chance these districts will regionalize.

Week 13 State Quarterfinals

2/4-1 vs 1/11-1
3-1 vs 6-1
5-1 vs 7-1
9-1 vs 10-1

"AA"
Same District 6 and WPIAL Playoff scenario as "A" with the exception that D6 AA playoffs will include 3 5-AA schools.

Week 12 Preliminary Round

1-1 vs 11-1

Week 13 Quarterfinals

1/11-1 vs 2-1
3-1 vs 4-1

5/6-1 vs 7-1
9-1 vs 10-1

"AAA"
WPIAL Playoffs weeks 9-12 just as in other classes
D6 playoffs To be determined....two choices:

A. 4 Team Playoff weeks 10 and 11
B. SubRegionalize with District 4 and have an 8 team 4/6 playoff weeks 10,11,12

Week 12 State Preliminary Round

2-1 vs 11-1
6-1 vs 4-1 (unless they choose subregional--then it would be subregional championship game)
8-1 vs 9-1

Week 13 State Quarterfinals

Winner 2-1 and 11-1 vs 1-1
District 3 Championship Game (automatic eastern final berth)
winner 4-1 and 6-1 vs WPIAL
Winner 8-1 and 9-1 vs 10-1

AAAA

Weeks 11,12,13 District 6/3 Tournament--8 teams
Weeks 9-12 WPIAL Tournament

Week 12 State Preliminary Round

2/4-1 Subregional champ vs 11-1
9/10-1 subregional champ vs 8-1

Week 13 State Quarterfinals

2/4/11 Preliminary Winner vs 12-1 (Philly)
District 1 Championship Game (winner in eastern final)

3/6 Subregional Champ game (winner in western final)
7-1 vs 9/10/8 Preliminary winner

I really don't think they should have messed with the way AA was set up in the first place. 5/6 and 9/10 winners playing first and Dist 7 straight into the west Finals. The way it stands now,District 9 has their own playoff for a district title, and district 9 consists of 2 AA schools(Brookville and Karns City) with 2 other A schools plaing up(Moniteau and Brockway) to give them a whoping 4 AA teams. They should be lumped in with D10 like D5 is with D6,and bring over an eastern dist. to make the 4th team for the semi's.

Eagle Alum....Then we could agree that D 6-AAAA was also a joke the past 10 years with only 4 teams competing and should have been lumped with another district a long time ago?

The PIAA rule as it stands is 4 teams to have a district, less than that and you MUST subregionalize. D9-AA could choose to subregionalize with 6 or 10 if they chose and the other district agreed.

For the record I can agree with "4" IF the PIAA has a 32 team bracket. With a 16 team (actually a few less) bracket in football I think "6" would be more appropriate, but that's just my opinion.

None of the 3 5-AA teams will qualify unless they are in the top 8 rankings combined with D6 as in the past except without an automatic qualifier. IF there were a 4th 5-AA team they could separate from D6 like 5-A is doing.

I've always said that d-6 AAAA is a joke,MOST years.Altoona and State College have had some decent teams over the years, but 99% of the time wouldn't make it out of the 2nd round of the Dist 7 or 1 playoffs.
My point about the AA was you have dist 10(16 schools) vs d9(4 schools) in 1/2 the western bracket,And D7 (31schools) vs d5/6 (18 schools).Out of the 69 schools in the west,49 of them are in one bracket,Yes I know it will metriculate down to 2 teams. But it gives AA the chance to turn into the same situation AAAA had for the last 16 years.D6 has 3 AAAA schools, and what does the Erie area have ?4 or 5? Years gone by,all Altoona or State had to do,is be the best of 8 schools and they'd be in the West final;when you had schools in D1 go undefeated or have 1 loss and not even make their district playoffs because they played a AAA school during the season and didn't get enough points.Either way,you have to beat everyone in front of you once the playoffs start to get to the finals. It just may make for a close game in the state quarters and a blowout in the western finals. It's not that big of a deal. It's just when you play who.

Some excellent points EagleAlum....Probably would be more fair if D6 and 10 were paired in one State Quarter and 7 and 9 in the other based on numbers. D9 is hanging by a thread since the current rule is that you must have 4 teams to have a district championship. If they fall under that they would be subregionalized with 10 and then WPIAL would probably earn back their western final berth (which would screw up the new WPIAL tournament format).

Another thought....Leave 6 have their own playoff and combine 5 and 9. Doesn't make geographic sense but if you play a D5 final and a D9 final and then have the winners play each other at a neutral site (Altoona or IUP) you would at least have a representative of 7 teams coming into the State Quarterfinal bracket. Still not good but better than a 4 team district championship.
