North Texas vs. Troy

Post by The Ancient Enemy »

This game is giving me a headache. I am about to head over to the stadium to see our Eagles take on the Trojans. I've been thinking about this game for a few days now, and I'm still undecided on who I am taking. UNT has won the conference multiple times in a row now, and both of these teams are coming off bowl appearances last season.

UNT's quarterback Daniel Meager, to put it nicely, is out of control at best. This is the worst QB I've seen at UNT, and the passing game is so pitiful they should almost scrap the passing plays from the playbook. 234 yards he's thrown for so far.

As far as rushing, Thomas is not getting the football. Cobbs is the starter and he's doing "okay".

But this is conference play now. UNT came back to beat MTSU, and although on a national scale that is horrible to have to do, MTSU is a lot better than last season. North Texas plays very well when it coems to conference play, which is good since they are coming off back to back blowout losses to Tulsa and Kansas State. Had they played the LSU game, they'd be coming off back to back to back blowout losses.

Cobbs has rushed for over 100 yards in every single conference game he's played in. However, if anyone can beat UNT in the Sun Belt, it's obviously Troy. And if anyone is going to steal that trophy, it's going to be Troy, and this season is the one to do it.

I hate picking against my teams. Very rarely will you see me pick against Penn State or Miami or UNT (unless it's a clear loss like to UT or LSU). I'm going to pick the Mean Green at home. They play well in the conference games, and I think that team knows that they are down this year and need to win this game.

The game is on ESPN2, kickoff is 7:30 EST.

This was perhaps the worst Div. I game I've seen in quite some time. I thought I was watching Portage versus Meyersdale.

Should I criticize anyone on here for having a N.Texas helmet as their Avatar?????? mmmmmmm, tempting since I was a "target" when I had a U GA helmet (and hey, their Top Ten!) but I won't go there.

North Texas dominates the Sun Belt why doesn't say a C-USA get them to replace Louisville

Probably because North Texas doesn't do well outside of the Sun Belt, for better or for worse. Head Roadie, I don't think it'd be very nice to do that since TAE actually goes to North Texas. If he didn't, he'd be fair game, but it's best to let him go.

Road, I told you months ago to say whatever you want. I'll probably agree with you.

Abpk, it's basically because UNT's basketball program sucks, and most conferences want you to be competitive in football and basketball. The basketball team has gotten a lot better over the past few years, and the admins have also beefed up facilities to help attract better recruits. It's important to note that the student body definitely just paid for a dorm solely for the athletes. As you can see, I am really excited about that. I'm also really excited that we have no real mascot, and that they change the uniforms every year and the helmets are still terrible looking. Another reason for them not moving up is because of support. I don't think there was more than 2,000 actual fans at that game last night. It was all students, otherwise. That is horrible considering how UNT does in the conference. Nobody cares, because that team cannot win a game over a team who is not on level with Idaho or Utah State. Every time UNT plays a team better than them, they get their **** kicked. There's no upward movement, and I really think no progress has been made in 4 years. I keep hearing about how Dickey is this great recruiter. Well, we are starting a redshirt freshman QB who is probably the worst I-A QB I have ever seen. I really think they could have held open auditions on campus and found about 25 kids better than Meager. I really, really, really dislike that coaching staff and how they do things. Thomas isn't even getting the football. UNT this season is absolutely terrible.

UNT wins that conference every year, not because they are getting better annually, but more so because the rest of the conference is so pitiful. Those other teams make no progress. UNT established themselves as the best team in the Sun Belt and then they decided that was good enough. That is definitely not good enough, to me at least. Let's keep in mind here that UNT lost to Tulsa 54-2 and could not move the ball w/ Cobbs and Thomas on a team that Maroney ran for about 700 yards against. They make no progress. And no one is going to care one bit until they start winning games they should not win. That includes games against teams like Tulsa, who are very bad but still better than UNT. They have a really, really long way to go.

TAE, that's about the sum of it. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like North Texas will win the Sun Belt this year, as I think Troy will. Troy, even if they lose one conference game (MTSU the only one they MIGHT lose), has the head to head advantage over North Texas. If they have another good year next year, they might get an invite to C-USA or the MAC. But North Texas needs to start playing competitively with worthy opponents to be worth an invite to another conference.

TAE- Don't you have athletic eligibility left? LOL I would think someone of your obvious experience and height wouldn't have a problem helping either the football or basketball programs. heh-heh-heh-heh!

On an aside, a few years back, I had the privilege of attending the D 1-AA playoff hosted by Troy. If you don't know where it is, it's about an hour southeast of Montgomery, and not too far from the Gulf. Takes about 19 hours straight through driving. As I was with JMU folks, prior to the game, walking around, the people there were sooooo nice, "Where y'all from"? "Have a good game", etc., all that sugar and sweetness. Once the game started, man, the cursing of JMU players, and fans, spitting on the players from the sidelines, all kinds of crap. After JMU had lost, and we were wondering if we would get out alive, it's like someone flipped a switch again. "Have a safe trip home, y'all!" "Glad y'all could come down heah!" What a bunch of schizoids!

That QB is so bad for UNT that I'm willing to challenge him to an accuracy contest. I can't imagine that me or any of my friends couldn't do a better job. Maybe he can throw deeper, but this kid looks like he's never played football in his life. But here I am talking trash on an 18 year old kid. I'm 25, I SHOULD be better than a kid who has little experience, just based on judgement and patience. He'd probably beat me out and I'd just end up calling him a "p*ssy" and quitting. hahaha

I have heard that Troy story as well. It is very classic. One of my professors (on the UNT athletic board) called Troy an "outlaw school". I don't know what the hell that means, but I like the sound of it. Is it too late to transfer... again?
