Best student section in the state...

Post by Coach »

This post isn't meant to start a new topic with everyone saying they are the best, etc. Just saw this on PennLive and then read the Post-Gazette article.

According to the Post-Gazette.... Erie Prep. Here is the writer's take after the playoff games from last weekend:

* Erie Cathedral Prep played North Hills in a Class AAAA boys' game later in the day at Edinboro. Erie Prep has to have the best student section in the state. They're creative with chants, they're loud and they're funny. They sang "Sweet Caroline" and "Living on a Prayer" at halftime, as well as some other songs. They did it without any music.

But the most unbelievable thing Erie Prep's student section did was this: All of a sudden in the middle of the game, one of the students was in nothing but a Speedo swim suit as he was dancing in the middle of the section. Police and game officials eventually got him out of the crowd and made him leave the gym.

Some of these schoosl in the PIAA playoffs do have some good student sections. The other year down at Ship, there were tons of students. The game featured Greencastle-Antrim and James Buchanan. That was a pretty loud atmosphere with lots of students for both sides.

They got the speedo idea from a Duke vs. UNC game. A guy stripped down to a speedo while a UNC player was shooting a free throw. It was hilarious and it worked. The kid missed the shot and later in an interview said that seeing a guy in a speedo threw his attention off a little bit. The guy in the speedo is now a pastor. I can't even imagine seeing this at a high school game.

Speedo Guy is a Duke thing. Only at Duke, they don't eject him, they make him a legend.

This is a 2006 game vs. Carolina, left side of the screen:

not throwing a wet blanket on the kids/fan fun...I'm all for it but how was that a neutral site?? One can practically spit on Edinboro from Erie!! And it snows like 355 days a year & they (NH) had to take buses all the way up 79?
I have to say thank you to me ..." for not being stupid enough to go to Penn State."

round 1 wasn't neutral.

NBC traveled to Clarion to play Johnsonburg
Shade got to play at UPJ versus Neshannock or however you spell it.

The student section for Glen Mills is pretty entertaining as well. They only allow the senior class to go to away games and they are loud and know their chants.

I have to agree that Erie Prep is probably the best I've seen personally. No offense to other enthusiastic schools, but it's tough to compete with them. The best I saw of them in action was at State high a few years back against Harrisburg (I think)..they did an ad-lib halftime show on the court trying to spell out P-R-E-P by laying on the floor and someone from the other school came out and ruined the party. Needless to say fans had to be separated and security even made the fans leave before the Prep student section could go outside.

Oh yes, that '07 game had the most electric atmosphere I have ever seen for a regular season game. The gym was packed, and the far side of the court was a player's nightmare with the two student sections on either side.

Also I remeber a few Jtown vs McCort games that have had some hostile student sections. Especially in McCort when it was 100 degrees and everyone was packed in there. I remember Bedford having a good basketball following back in the days of Troy Harris and company. Also Somerset's "Flock" is getting stronger as that program has been on the rise in recent years. I remember one game where a Golden Eagle fan wore a ref's shirt, sunglasses, and a stick and did a hilarious impression of a blind ref after a call went against his team. He was then removed from the game with thunderous applause from the students.

Yet I think the most consistently strong student section must go to Winber's "Legion of Doom." It seems like there is always a strong showing of school spirit no matter if the Ramblers are above or below .500.
