Claysburg plays Mifflin in the first round of regionals on Saturday at 12:30.

How does everyone think Claysburg's chances are of beating Mifflin?

My personal opinion is that they'll have to throw Swope and he'll have to be "on" to win this game. With a better draw, they may have been able to throw Reed (or even Baird if they'd have gotten the Indiana team). Mifflin County is comprised of two big school districts (Lewistown and Indian Valley) and is battle tested in the Central Penn League. I think it will be a competitive game but it will be a notch above the intensity level of the past two weeks and it's hard to just jump right into that.

disadvantage for Claysburg getting a tough draw but big advantage if they can pull out a win

maybe somebody can help me here-1) is the kelly federation in altoona on par with cambria county legion baseball and 2) is the greater city league in altoona the same as aaaba in johnstown--- let me know- i read in the paper where the semis had two teams combine for 19 errors in game 1 and the score for game 2 was 19-15-- if i was the coach for either team i would have quit--- i would have to say at this level of baseball that is totally unacceptable-- i cant imagine in the playoffs this kind of games happen--- if this is the best altoona has to offer ill watch minor league little league--- the fan---

One man's opinion:

Legion ball is a slight notch above the Federation but it's not exactly a fair comparison since the Federation cutoff is 18 and Legion is 19. As with Legion ball, defense can be shoddy at times. In either league, if there's a no error game it's usually because the pitcher had 15 strikeouts and the defense only had to make 6 plays. Interestingly, a bunch of kids who played Federation last year played Legion this year in Claysburg, Patton and Lilly.

With the exception of the bottom dwellers, the City League is on par with the AAABA league, probably even a little better when you consider that Altoona's AAABA "all star" team plays in the league. On the other teams, you're talking about a lot of former college players who still have considerable game. Interestingly, some of Blair County's best young players (Pat Smith, Andy Smithmyer, Brock Porter, Matt Gehret) are playing in Johnstown this year.

Some of the kids who've played both told me the good Federation teams are on par with the good Legion teams but there's more depth in the Legion league and the middle to bottom Legion teams are much better than the middle to bottom teams in the Federation.
