Define "best team" in a geographically "local" sense...

Assuming Clairton advances past North Catholic...No one is going to touch them unless injuries further deplete them. BG doesn't have a chance against them. BG has some athletes. Everyone on Clairton is an athlete.

The best team in that GEOGRAPHIC region isn't BG, or Somerset, or Tyrone...nor is it State College or Clearfield...

It's Altoona Area. Period. And it's not even close.

Altoona has spent the better part of the last decade playing AAAA teams in the Mid Penn or WPIAL, so technically they aren't a District 6 team. My sources tell me that outside of Chadbourne (a VERY good local player, the best outside of Givens, Mencer, and the kid from Jtown), McCloskey, Kitt, and possibly Gormley, nobody else from BG's current team would smell the field for Altoona, and outside of Chadbourne, the others would have to play different positions than they do for BG to get on the field.

Granted, outside of Penn Trafford and McKeesport (who Altoona really should have beaten), they have played in the weakest of the 3 WPIAL AAAA sections.

With that said, Altoona will likely finish 7-2 and host a 1st round WPIAL AAAA playoff game on Halloween at Mansion Park. I'm sure sending a team like Bethel Park, Mount Lebanon, North Hills, or North Allegheny (Altoona's possible opponents) on a 2 1/2 hour bus ride east for a playoff game isn't exactly what the WPIAL had in mind when they accepted Altoona.

I would hope so, they have 933 boys in their school compared to 118 at BG. Chadbourn would help them out big time though, he's a legit player and athlete. McCloskey, Gormley,Berger, and Kitt are all very good players too, and they'll all play college ball one way or another.

The sad thing though, can we always say Altoona is the clear cut best team around here? Maybe just with size and numbers they would win, but it's been a rare thing the past five years to see Altoona have some division one talent.

The past 5 years or so have been lean, but plenty of D1 players prior to that, usually 1 a season or so on average.

This year, Givens and Mencer are D1 players.

As I said, the only BG player who would be a difference maker on this year's Altoona team would be Chadbourne. The other guys would be competing for playing time and adding depth, likely at different positions that they are playing at BG.

Don't be surprised if BG loses 2-3 games the rest of the season. Talking with my cousin who is on the team he has said a lof starters are starting to get a big head and big egos. That everything will just be easy and they dont even have to try til semifinals. BG needs to lose a game in the regular season or I see them getting knocked off their horses during the playoffs. Blairsville and portage won't care what lhac schedule BG competes in... They only care if they get more points then BG.

That doesn't surprise me at all. BG would be a very good 7 on 7 team.

Will BG be tested?

Well for them to lose 3 games it would mean they would lose to Johnstown, Somerset, and if and when the bow out in the playoffs. I don't think Johnstown will beat them, but Somerset could. So saying don't be surprised if they 2-3 more games isn't really a leap of faith, calling a 16-0 season would be a little more gutsy.

What good football team doesn't get confident? You don't think the kids at Portage and Blairsville aren't thinking the same way right now? Come on man, you've really had it out for BG this year.

I'm not saying BG is the greatest team in the world, but I mean they are 8-0. Every game has been a blowout. They're playing the best of anyone right now in 6A.

I would have to agree that this year Altoona is the best team in D6. State College doesn't appear to be as good this year. 7 on 7 is meaningless, Altoona would manhandle BG and Somerset will win by 14 in my opinion when they play.
