Too early?
Re: Too early?
9 full scholarships? UPJ has I believe 2. The only programs UPJ plays in the PSAC that are out of their league are Seton Hill and Mercyhurst. None of the state schools in the west can compete with them either, because they are able to give much more money than state schools have since they're private. Would you rather play on a good team and ride pine or play on a mediocre team and actually see the field?

NCAA Baseball Scholarship breakdown
Division I - 11.7
Division II - 9
Division III - 0
Reference - http://www.scholarshipstats.com/ncaalimits.html
You lost me a bit on the private school thing.
IUP coach "Hey I'll give you a 50% scholarship" IUP's tuition for an in-state resident is what? 21 grand? So he's now playing $11,500.
Seton Hill coach "Hey I'll give you a 50% scholarship" SHU tuition in-state tuition is probably about $32 grand give or take? So that same kid is paying $16,000.
Throw in any academic or whatever financial aid, and maybe one is cheaper than the other. Everyone's circumstance is different on how you pay for college.
But, no UPJ isn't playing with 2 scholarships on a 40 man roster.

Re: Too early?
I mean correct me if I'm wrong, I don't know the UPJ baseball program so maybe I'm way off base. But I don't see why they would play with 7 less scholarships than everyone else in Division 2 baseball.
Re: Too early?
I'm not real familiar w/ UPJ's baseball scholarship situation. But, they wanted one of my sons for their relatively new Track and Field team (only been in existence 2-3 years I believe). Unfortunately, they have a "chicken or the egg" scenario right now with Track. The school wants to see results, before they would start dishing out sizeable scholarships for Track. But, how do you attract the best athletes when you offer them little-to-nothing, to come to a program that hasn't found its feet yet (I believe their first year, out of all the Meets they competed in, they only scored a few team points,...the whole year). I believe they're a little better now. Anyhow, after the Coach explained all the time demands, practice requirements, all Meets on the weekends, winter and summer, etc.,....they offered to cover half of my son's Room/Board, if he stayed on Campus. so,...a little less than $2k/year.... My son decided to concentrate on getting his Degree. However, even a Half Tuition scholarship might've made the time commitment worth while. As it stood,...Thanks, but no thanks.dougkeklak wrote:Yeah, I had a strange situation with baseball at UPJ. Not going to bore you with a lot of the specifics but it kind of felt like it was just an open tryout. I don't know if anyone actually was on scholarship, never really talked about it. I signed a letter of intent, but there was never any talk of aid. Around my sophomore year I kind of just decided I need to get on with my life and dedicate full time to studies (and get a part-time gig and make some $$$). This would have been like 94-95... so under the previous coach.

Re: Too early?
This may be how many each school CAN offer. UPJ may choose not to? Just guessing. No real data, or facts to back up my theory.Crimson's Ghost wrote:NCAA Baseball Scholarship breakdown

Re: Too early?
I don't really know either, but I just figured they would use their scholarship allotment, otherwise they could just drop to Division 3 since they don't give out scholarships.
Re: Too early?
I know for a fact baseball at UPJ does not have 9 scholarships. Research what you can find on here but UPJ doesn't have 9 and many PSAC schools don't have close to that.
Re: Too early?
Those scholarships limits are rarely reached in the PSAC. It has been a few years, but I know when the football limit for scholarships in DII was 32, Ship was giving 13. The only PSAC school that was close was IUP at twenty couple.
The biggest lie in D2 sports is you can earn scholarship $$ after they get you on campus.
NCAA schools can't compete in DI, DII, and DIII depending on the sport. In for a penny, in for a pound. I'm all but certain that whatever you play in one sport, you play in all.

Re: Too early?
It's an interesting topic, I would love to talk to a PSAC AD and Head Baseball Coach and inquire about their funding for their program and the rationale behind the decisions, because the league is a strong D2 league in football and basketball and I imagine they all use their allotment for those sports.

Re: Too early?
And obviously UPJ isn't skimping the wrestling program's funding.
Im just curious how do you know UPJ isn't using their allotment? I'm intrigued.
