Post by ShouldaCouldaWoulda »

Employees of Westmont Hilltop SD may soon be allowed to enroll their children in 🏫 tuition-free 🤔

Westmont soon tuition free?

Would allow teachers that teach at Westmont that live in another school district to send their kids to Westmont at no cost - similar to what most other school districts in the area already do.

This should be a state law. So silly that schools charge for that. I’ve heard numbers thrown around like 5-7k per kid per year! You expect teachers that make like 50-60k to be able to afford that?

Who in their right mind would want their kids to go there. That school has become as bad as Greater Johnstown. Westy had to do something, I am sure their enrollment is going down other than the inner city people moving up on the hilltop.

Their enrollment has dropped significantly. At one point in the early 00’s they were AAA in the 4 class system. Now they are mid AA in the 6 class system. No idea how the school is but people are leaving for a reason.

I believe Bedford already does this. If I remember correctly, they had a teacher who lived in Somerset and brought their son with them to Bedford (I think he played football, but not sure on other sports).

It happens in some school districts across the state.

If people are sending their kids elsewhere, they aren't going for free. Who has that kind of money?

I can't speak for other sports, but Westmont boys and girls basketball, just finished their seasons in AAA in the 6 class system, with the girls going all the way to the state finals!!

ALL schools in this area are fighting a losing battle with population loss. I remember when Johnstown was AAAAA not too long ago. They just finished basketball in AAAA.

One final note, the Westmont elementary school, which is only several years old, is already at or over capacity so their loss of students apparently is GREATLY exaggerated. LOL.

It’s called graduating. The average age of a homeowner in Westmont is probably pushing 80. Young people aren’t having many kids. And they can’t afford to buy a house in Westmont.

I don’t think that’s accurate at all. Westmont was always AA under the old four class system.
