I like the idea of offering solutions as opposed to just complaints. Identifying problems, issues and slights is easy to do, but finding ways to fix it is a lot more difficult. I’ll propose two solutions to the boundary-less high school issue that we face in PA.

1. For all team sports, any boundary-less school must play either 3A or 6A. If your enrollment qualifies you as single, double or triple then you play in the 3A playoffs. No exceptions. If your enrollment qualifies you as 4, 5 or 6A then you play 6A playoffs. This acknowledges the advantages that a boundary-less school has over a boundary school and still keeps some structure in place for classification by enrollment. If kids are transferring for academic, religious or a better educational experiences then leveling the playing field for playoffs shouldn’t matter.

2. If a player transfers to ANY high school after their freshman year of HS is completed, they are not eligible for post season competition that year. This is boundary and boundary-less. This would restrict the likelihood of a group of parents/players creating a dream team scenario. This could be challenged and overturned if the school the athlete is transferring from signs off on it. That would permit legitimate scenarios to go through, example: custody situations, moving for a parents job, academic offering (vo-tech), etc. You get your freshman year and then decide. If you’re gonna change after their freshman season, you’re permitted but automatically are ineligible for playoffs unless granted an acceptance. Kids can still attend and play where they want to. It just levels things up for playoffs.

Championships and playoffs are what really matter the most in these discussions for most folks. I think people can accept their teams competing against boundary-less schools in regular season play, but it’s tougher to accept when a team’s season ends, a player’s career ends, when a boundary school is beaten by a boundary-less. We could also pretend to that we could do separate playoffs, but being realistic, that’s probably never going to happen.
