Mount Union/AA playoff picture

Post by Crimson's Ghost »

On Monday, Mount Union announced it will forfeit the remainder of its games. The Trojans are 7-2 and were sitting as the No. 6 seed for the AA playoffs. By the sounds of it, Mount Union had about 12 healthy players left standing. Commendable effort to win seven games with virtually no backups and every kid never really leaving the field.

Assuming everyone just shifts up one spot, that creates a unique storyline for Friday night. Bald Eagle (4-5, 510 playoff points) hosts Central Cambria (4-5, 510 playoff points). Seemingly the winner is going to advance and get that last playoff spot.

1. Bishop McCort 9-0 1270
2. Richland 8-1 1110
3. Cambria Heights 8-1 1080
4. River Valley 8-1 1070
5. Marion Center 8-1 1030
(Mount Union)
6. Bellwood-Antis 5-4 770
7. United 6-3 700
8. Bald Eagle 4-5 510
9. Central Cambria 4-5 510

Unless something changed, this was from the Altoona Mirror:

“District 6 chairman Ralph Cecere was contacted by the Mirror on Monday night and asked how Mount Union removing itself from the Class 2A playoffs would impact the field.

Cecere said each team below the Trojans in the current top eight would move up a spot but that teams that finish outside the top eight with Mount Union still on the list would not be eligible to move into the playoffs — meaning the top seed in Class 2A, currently McCort-Carroll, would receive a first-round bye. Bellwood-Antis, currently No. 7, would move up to No. 6, and United Valley, currently No. 8, would move up to No. 7.”

I see. That wasn't mentioned in the initial WTAJ report.

That stinks. Winner take all week 10 game sounds way more interesting.

If McCort loses, it would be Richland, right?

Win or lose, I'm sure most high school seniors would prefer to have one more game and a chance to play in a playoff game

More games for kids and I'm sure #9 Bald Eagle would beat most of the Heritage teams ahead of them. Bald Eagle plays a MUCH harder schedule, let the #9 team (now #8) in

Agreed.^^^^ Give the #9 team the option of accepting or declining instead of giving the odds-on #1 fave a bye.
It ain't over until it's over.

The argument is who earned it more? The 5-5 team in a tougher conference or the 7-3 team who plays in an easier conference?
