Can someone define generational talent?

Saw this comment and was curious how people define it.

I would consider Paul Skene, Jeremiah Smith to be examples of this at the MLB and NCAA level respectively.

but in high school football, we have a lot of really good players but who is generational talent at this level. interesting conversation, even Dieon Sanders has argued that there are nfl hall of famers who were so good they deserve their own wing in Canton

A generation is about 20-25 years. So I’d say a generational talent isn’t necessarily THE best player in the last 20-25 years for a given school, but one who could make a serious argument to be named the best.

So realistically it’s probably the best 1-3ish players in the last 25 years for a given school.

And as an added qualifier, these types of players are good enough that even if they played for another school they’d be a generational talent. Some teams are so good every year that the player’s success is a product of the team and system, whereas a generational talent is one who makes the makes the team’s success a product of the player.

I don’t watch them much, but would agree that those 2 would have made any team they were on better.

Forest Hills, Richardson is great but I’m not sure I’d put him ahead of Cecere or Crawley as far as generational talent.

For purpose of this discussion, someone mentioned the past 20 -25 years. McKavish was mid-90's. He def. fits the description if you expand to 30 yrs.

Mercury Swaim at Bedford. Re-wrote the offensive record books at a historically great program and was better on defense. Now competing for a starting LB role at New Mexico.

Ethan Weber (starting RB at Lafayette) and August Cook
(1 year at Army then converted to track) were very good as well for Bedford.

Those 2 would have been for their generation for sure!

Currently I'd say Grady Snyder and Will Seymour are names most people would throw out there recently, definitely missing some candidates from the 2000's that others would know

Jeff Hoenstine at Central. In the top 10 all time passing yards for the state.
Jesse Jones at Tyrone. Was 6 or 7 all time rushing when he graduated.
