If this is such a free country, why not let each person decide for him or herself what to do with their social security fund. If they invest it, it's their choice, their risk. If not, well, they'll be getting a rather paltry sum with no risk involved. But let the people decide.

Re: I am not Liberal. Are you?
The trouble with that plan Flea is the start up cost. If even 10% of the people in the country stop paying into SS and put their money in the stock market, how do we pay the current retirees? Our paychecks now cover all those on SS. Therefore it would require a tremendous amount of money to start the program. Where would that money come from?

Wow, sounds close to the plan Pres Bush proposed.
DCP - if you trully are for privatization of SS, here's your chance.

My point has been made. There doesn't seem to be any reason for me to argue for it when there is only a few people arguing against. I see no reason to make this battle any more pitched then it already is.

That's what I thought
You were the one griping the other day that we don't bring up conservative issues that you agree with. You're the one trying to convince us all you're not liberal. Here's your chance and you take a pass. Is it because you're afraid to admit that you may actually agree with an idea proposed by President Bush?
Like I said, if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck, you can bet your rearend it's a duck. And you walk like a liberal and talk like a liberal.

Re: I am not Liberal. Are you?
LionPride, why would I talk on a subject when people are doing it for me? It would be a waste. I am not afraid to admit I agree with Bush on a few things. I agree with Liberals on a few things. I disagree with both on a few things. There is no point to argue when you agree with the people arguing, or if your point has already been made. Here, since you insist on me arguing: Why do we need Social Security? America lasted for a long time and there was little to no need for Social Security. Social Security did not work during the Great Depression, why would it work now? There might now have been as many old people then, but there WERE old people.

The first social security taxes were collected in January 1937. The stock market crash which entered us into the Depression was in 1929. For what it's worth.

Re: I am not Liberal. Are you?
The fact remains it went into effect during the great depression in an attempt to end it. What does it matter when it starts?

You said "it did not WORK during the Great Depression", that's why.

Re: I am not Liberal. Are you?
There are concrete examples of how a private SS works and works a heck of a lot better than our current system. The Galveston TX example is well known but even better is the country of Chile is also an excellent example. Apparently some on here can't face that reality!
Why don't we let the people decide how to invest their payroll taxes? Make it a national referendum and let the people decide. Do some of you on here have a problem with letting the people decide? I garuntee that if that happened the vast majority would OPT out in a heartbeat!
