North Star's Somerset, D5, and State Dominance
North Star's Somerset, D5, and State Dominance
I just wanted to see what people thought about North Star's dominance in nearly all sports over the past 3-5 years.
4 volleyball D5 championships, state semi/quarter final
3 wrestling D5 championships, state quarterfinal, numerous individual championships/state performances
2 football D5 Championships, state quarter final
1 boys basketball D5 championship/ 1 D5 final
1 girls soccer D5 final
1 boys soccer D5 final
1 softball D5 final
Individual Golf D5 Championships
Where do you think it comes from? Coaching, Athletes, Tradition?
If/when will it pass?

They recruit....just kidding.
NS athletes know how to step it up during the post season.

In football, they play in a conference where they are the only AA team in a league of all A teams. That's a starter. Then there are only 3 district 5 teams in the AA football playoffs. Top seed gets a by. So many times the district 5 champ only has to play ONE game and, if victorious, wins the district crown. Can you take solace in the fact that ONE game can make you a champion, while in other districts a team has to win 3 or 4 times to become champ?

Volleyball and wrestling ill give you. Football had a good run last year. The rest are a result of being in D5.

Re: North Star's Somerset, D5, and State Dominance
that's district dominance. not state dominance. to dominate at the state level you have to be bringing home at least a few state titles. north star has 0. i don't know how that equates to state dominance. i'd take bishop guilfoyle's and northern cambria's success on the girls side over north star's the last five years. both schools have a state championship and more state championship appearances. and no doubt, there is no state dominance in football or soccer for north star.
nevertheless, north star deserves credit for their d5 dominance and their strong performances at the state level over the last few years. their recent string of classes have some great athletes and obviously their teams know how to play together and win.
