Missing Players Lupek/Rasko
I saw where Jimmy Lupek did not play the other night and Jen Rasko was also absent from the Windber CV girls Box score. Injuries or illness?

Re: Missing Players Lupek/Rasko
Thanks for the info on Rasko. I will miss her playing against Ferndale at Windber in a few weeks. I was looking forward to that being a great Game of the Week Broadcast. Maybe it will be anyway huh?
Re: Missing Players Lupek/Rasko
Who determines what games are telecast as games of the week and how is that determination made? is it a money thing? Do schools or parents fund the telecasts?
Is this a westpac network? I saw the Windber boys play JHS on TV. I think I saw a couple westpac girls teams playing one nite too. Neither of the games I saw were competitive. Why would you not televise a competitive game like JHS v McCort or Carroll v Somerset boys or Westmont, Forest Hills or McCort girls? These seem to be the competitive teams in the area. How about Shade boys? They have a good team and they are westpac. Just wondering why you'd televise lower end games with non competitive teams and not televise games with the good teams.

Re: Missing Players Lupek/Rasko
The first thing we try to do is get as many of our local teams on as we can. That includes the Johnstown veiwing area and some surrounding areas.
There are certain tournaments we are locked into. Those include the WAABA, Mountain Cat and Windber Rotary. We do these games because we can tape two games during one night which reduces some of our costs.
In getting the local teams on, we do our best to make sure they are good competitive games. Balancing that with trying to get as many different teams on as possible is tough.
As far as sponsorships are concerned, the only time that really comes into play is during the playoffs. Because we have to pay the PIAA to tape games, our costs are increased and therefor we cannot afford to do playoff games without sponsorships that go above and beyond our regular sponsors.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the explanation stilajacket.
Since you are in the media, can you explain why there has been almost no coverage of high school basketball in the Tribune Democrat? Used to be they'd run feature articles on boys and girls games several times a week. We have some real good teams, especially on the girls side, and the Tribune is doing nothing to cover them. JHS boys get some ink and some Westpac girls teams are covered intermittantly (probably because Mastovich, Isenbarg and Knopsnyder are westpac grads), but most other teams are ignored, including the Shade boys who are TOUGH. When articles appear they are usually authored by "The Tribune Democrat" indicating that a reporter did not attend the game.
I also have noticed a lack of TV sports coverage of high school games compared with years past.
Are the Johnstown paper and TV stations in financial trouble? I heard the Tribune had layoffs in the sports department. Alot of people are fed up with the paper failing to cover local sports. Some I know have cancelled their subscriptions to the Tribune Democrat because of it. Do you have any insight on what is happening?

Re: Missing Players Lupek/Rasko
Actually I do.
I worked with Matt Jordan the other night and he explained that the Tribune has laid off essentially everyone in the sports department with the exception of Corey and Eric and of course Mike. One of them has to stay in the office to take basketball box scores evey night. They can occassionally send one out to a game, and since there are only three of them and they don't each work every day of the week...well you figure it out. They are asking that both coaches contact them following games so that they can write stories that way.
As far as the TV, not sure.

Re: Missing Players Lupek/Rasko
That's really a shame for the kids.
Johnstown is such a terribly fragmented community. It seems like a few teams receive coverage and the rest are mostly ignored. The Tribune Democrat better watch that their tactic of covering the teams with the political connections and ignoring the rest does not result in additional losses to circulation. Or will they be eligible for some TARP money too?

Re: Missing Players Lupek/Rasko
Couple of notes regarding the Tribune-Democrat...
The T-D is actually down to four staffers in the sports dept... Eric Knopsnyder, Cory Isenberg, Mike Mastovich and Joe Gordon.
Given the layoffs, the easy fix was apparently to cut back on HS sports coverage.
However, the paper still covers EVERY Chiefs home hockey game, and managed to find enough money to send the sports editor to Tampa for the Super Bowl...
"Psycho' needs to read the paper a bit closer. I have noted in recent weeks that Isenbarg's (sic) by-line has be been on HS games involving: Shade/Shanksville, Westmont/CH, United/Laurel Valley and Bishop McCort/Westmont. That, too me, appears to be coverage of all three local conferences. I hardly think there is a WestPac bias...
Sources tell me that Isenberg, the main HS beat writer, is now on desk duty, as opposed to covering games four days per week. And, apparently the 'stringer' budget has been reduced. Makes one shudder to think what HS football coverage will look like in the fall.
At any rate, it does little good to complain on here... that is just preaching to the choir.
Much more will be accomplished if you e-mail, or call the editor (Chip Minemyer) and publisher (Robin Quillon) and TELL them you are going to drop your subscription if HS coverage isn't increased.
These are typical management people. Clueless. If no one complains... they don't think there is a problem. 8)

Re: Missing Players Lupek/Rasko
What these newspaper execs don't seem to understand is that we can get AP and national sports news anywhere. TV (ESPN, Fox), Internet (espn.com, cbssportsline.com, etc). The only place to get local high school sports news is your local newspaper. That should be their No. 1 focus above all else. The Daily American has great coverage of high school sports from Somerset County as does the Bedford Gazette for Bedford County. The Altoona Mirror has a fantastic sports section for a city newspaper. The T-D does not.
