Bucco Slide
Bucco Slide
This is getting real ugly. I've taken a few days off reading any papers or listening or watching to sports talk shows, but is there any mumbling in P-burg about dumping Lloyd?

What they should do is dump the starting pitchers. They would have to improve to get to terrible. What was considered the team's strong point entering the season has turned into a joke. They seem to be only getting 1 (if that) quality start every time through the rotation. To compound matters, it looks like the ineffectiveness of the starters is starting to spread to the bullpen.
I realize they can't dump their starters, but I'm not sure they don't need some type of shake up to get their focus back. They seem to have fallen into a comfort zone that they can go out and pitch however and they will still have their spot in the rotation. A wake-up call may be necessary.
The team has been 'snake-bitten' during the recent slide. When the offense produces the pitching has taken a nose dive, and when the pitching has been sharp the offensive has been shut down.

the pirates are getting little closer each season as they had a .500 record here in late May early June however I just really dont see them contending for a Central title anytime soon. I agree with Von Cap about the pitchers and shaking things up there some. As far as Lloyd being manager I think if they really slide big time he will be fired. They are sinking really fast right now.

Well they lost again in a really crazy game Sat. afternoon in Oakland. Blass and Brown were pretty critical during the contest, especially about the inability of the Pirates to execute fundamentals like laying down a bunt or getting a decent lead when on base, especially when the runner was being ignored, as Redmond was when he came in to pinch run. God, is the guy brainless?! Worse yet, do the base coaches have a clue? And is there a pitcher on the staff that's truly dependable?
The Oakland pitchers, like most hurlers now facing the Pirates, played beanball, with Kendall almost getting his jaw knocked off. Torres got thrown out when he did the old tit for tat.
The fans are obviously frustrated and angry, but except for SportsBeat or a few radio talk shows or the fan message board on the Pirate site, that's not being conveyed very well. Instead, some writers blast Pirate fans for not caring.
It's called self-preservation, for God's sake! Thank goodness many fans don't care or there'd be suicides all over the Burg.
I asked a friend if it could get any worse. His reply: "It's the Pirates, of course it can!"

I look at it like this...
At close to .500 this ragtag group was playing over its head for the first two months of the season. I feel they are a team that will go about 10-15 games under again this season. In the next two years I feel we will finally see a Pirates team go OVER .500 with the young players getting a chance to play now.

The Pirates problems start at the top.McClendon is a great players coach. But he tends to coach his team outta more games than he helps them in.Example Saturday,he is so quick to yank the young pitchers who need to learn how to get out of jams, but runs himself short in the bullpen and leaves Mesa in there to give up 4 or 5 runs. The one that really irritated me was the sacrifice bunt with Castillio in the 6th with nobody out.
In a 0-0 game, yeah sure. But in a game that's only 1/2 over and 13 runs have already been put up by the 2 teams, why give the other team an out?they got 3 more hits that inning and woulda scored more than 2 runs in the sixth if they had another out.Make Lloyd a position coach and get someone with a clue.

My interest in this particular forum is not so much how the Pirates are doing but how the media perceive how they're doing. My feeling is that by and large the Pirate organization hasn't experienced much heat from the media in the area -- mainly because, I guess, the Steelers and Pens come first in the Burg no mater what people might want to say.
I'm always hearing about historically horrible ownership of professional teams like the Arizona Cardinals and the Los Angeles Clippers. Well, the Pirates have to be included in this group. To blame it all on the financial set-up in the ML is nuts. A variety of small-market teams have had success in this climate. But not the Pirates. And I don't see anything changing at all until something radically is done. An ownership change would be nice, but better yet would be to bring in some imaginative baseball minds.
Here's an example of how totally uncreative the Buccos are. In yesterday's game against Oakland they had a situation that was just perfect for a suicide squeeze. Blass on TV and Walk on radio (yes, sometimes I have both of them on -- sue me!) were practically begging for the play. No dice.
Ultimately the Buccos lost with no real effort to manufacture that run. To my mind the sportswriters have an obligation to point this out. I didn't read any papers yet today but I bet there isn't much said about it. I might be wrong but probably not.
It's one thing for people like us to get on forums and gripe, but the sports news media have to get on the ball. But let's see -- we're halfway through June and in a month or so the Steelers will be in camp....

Your point is well taken Foghorn. A prime example is on Fox Sports Pittsburgh every evening. Even though we are in the heart of baseball season, the show has provided what seems to be as much air time to the Steelers as they have the Pirates the last few weeks.
In the media's defense, what do they have to write about the Pirates that hasn't already been written or that sells papers. The Pirates don't have a superstar like Lemeiux who draws interest everytime his name is mentioned. The Buccos as a team don't have the hearts of Western PA like the Steelers, and how does the media identify the problems that have lead to 10+ losing seasons in a row?

The easiest thing to do in sports is hustle.
Will the Pirates ever have a superstar again who will actually remain with the team for an extended time? The realities of free agency and the inequity of baseball's financial set-up almost make this an impossibility, don't they?
Someone like this with a little flair and personality will almost always get fans and media excited.
