Steelers on TV and Radio

I know some people don't like the Sunday Night ESPN crew, but I do. They did the Steeler pre-season game against Philadelphia tonight -- with Pat Summerall filling in for Mike Patrick, who had an operation or something. Anyway, Summerall still has it, and Joe Theisman and Paul Maguire are a nice team.

What's the story on Myron Cope? I haven't been listening that much on the radio, but I've noticed he's been missing. I didn't hear why.

I'm told that Myron Cope is recovering from throat surgery performed in late July. The network says he will be back "soon" (whenever that is).

Myron was also battling pneumonia after the surgery. He was supposed to be back for last weeks game, and I'm not sure why he wasn't. There's no better way to watch a Steeler game than to turn off the volume (TV announcers are pitiful), and listen to Myron, Tunch, and Bill. The problem is that I have satellite, and there is a 3 second delay for the picture. So, listening to the radio, I know the play before I see it.

Same deal here. I wish there were some way to put a delay on my radio or something.

Me. too. I started doing that (TV sound off, radio on) while watching the Pirates in the Bob Prince days (showing my age here). About the delay...when you consider that Hillgrove has to watch the play, then make the call...it's probably a 7 to 8 second delay from real time. Sometimes I like knowing what's going to happen, sometimes I don't.

It's not as fun with football though. You hear Bill Hargrove saying the QB is dropping back to pass before the ball is even snapped. Then, when Kordell was QB, you'd hear that it was incomplete before you could see the play. It is really frustrating. But I still do it anyway, when I'm watching the game myself (if my wife is in the room, she's not very fond of it) .

I get a little irritated when the announcers think they know what went wrong on every play and sometimes they think they are the head coach. I haven't tried turning the tv sound off and listening to the radio. It sounds like a good idea. It is interesting what Myrone has to say sometimes. The steelers seem to be on the rite track with their running game which will set up the big plays with Burress and Ward. GO STEELERS!

I agree. Most of today's TV announcers are horrible. Myron, Tunch and Bill do a terrific job.

There's such great chemistry among the four (including Wolfley here) that even if the game might stink just listening to the team makes up for it. Myron is an institution by himself. I'm not sure if the younger gang remembers this, but Cope used to be a terrific writer, contributing a lot of stories to SI during the glory years. Wonder if he still writes.

He wrote a book a few years ago, but not sure about the SI or paper stories. Can't remember the name of the book though.
