Lilly gets 1,000th as N.D. hands Pen Argyl first loss
Wednesday, February 02, 2005
PEN ARGYL -- Chadd Lilly was indeed (The Man), this time.
Notre Dame High School of Green Pond's exciting, emotional senior boys basketball standout put an exclamation point on the Crusaders' 85-72 victory over previously unbeaten Pen Argyl with a steal and slam during a key 8-0 spurt midway through the fourth quarter.
Lilly finished the amazing performance with "33" points, eight rebounds, six steals and three assists to lead Notre Dame in Tuesday night's Colonial League showdown before a boisterous but well-behaved standing-room-only crowd.
Coach Pat Boyle's Crusaders, ranked No.# 8 in The Express-Times region, improved to 19-3 overall and 16-1 in the league. Pen Argyl, the No. #4-ranked team, fell to 20-1 and 15-1. Notre Dame owns a one-half game lead in the East Division standings.
Lilly, who scored only 10 points during a 12-point loss to Pen Argyl last month, reached the 1,000-point milestone with a 3-pointer late in the second quarter.
More importantly, No. #3 kept his composure throughout the close, physical contest -- something he failed to do in the first meeting when he was hit with a technical before fouling out.
"I wasn't worried about 1,000 because I knew we still had a couple games left," the 6-foot-2 Lilly said. "I know I scored a lot of points tonight but my role on the team doesn't change. Everyone is playing their roles really well.
"We wanted to come in and let them know we could play with them. We'll probably play them again in a week, so we need to keep playing really well."
"The kid (Lilly) is a great player," Pen Argyl coach George Hicks said. "He's going to make some plays."
Predictably, Boyle complimented Lilly for his effort and for keeping his cool.
"Chadd's starting to learn how to handle certain situations and I'm proud of him," the coach said. "Chadd is a very passionate person I think that's the best word for it. Sometimes his passion gets the best of him, but tonight he played with passion and under control."
Unlike the first meeting when the Green Knights opened a 32-8 second-quarter lead, this time Notre Dame came out quickly and went ahead 9-0.
Pen Argyl responded with a 9-0 run to tie the score -- and the game was on.
Besides Lilly, the Crusaders received key contributions from center Nolan Thevenet (eight points, eight rebounds) and reserves Tom VanSyckle (nine points) and Chris Dyonda (seven points). VanSyckle and Dyonda hit 3-pointers in the second quarter as Notre Dame opened a 40-32 lead at intermission.
The Green Knights never could catch their rivals in the second half, but they did close within 62-58 with 5:25 left. Notre Dame then used an 8-0 run -- including Lilly's steal and slam -- to build a 10-point lead.
Matt Gordon scored 13 points for the Crusaders, who made 31 of 33 free-throw attempts.
"I thought the key wasn't the start because they answered our run and tied it (at 9-9)," Boyle said, "but instead the way we reacted when they made the first run at us. We showed composure and kept playing.
"All this win means is we're getting better. They handled us the first time. Even though they won by 12, the score wasn't indicative of the way they beat us. I still don't know if we're a better team than they are. Hopefully, we'll play again next week."
Seniors Mike Bortz, Brad Feller and Josh Melhem combined for 55 points for Pen Argyl. Bortz scored 17 of his 23 points before halftime, while Feller totaled 13 of his 17 after intermission.
Two starters fouled out for both teams -- Tim Hicks and Ryan Melhem of Pen Argyl, and Doug Weaver and Thevenet of Notre Dame -- as 63 free throws were attempted. (There were 69 foul shots in the first meeting.)
"We didn't play our brand of basketball, we didn't play defense," Hicks said. "The unbeaten season is over with so there's nothing to talk about there anymore."
Asked if he and his players are looking forward to a possible rematch with Notre Dame in next Friday night's Colonial League championship, Hicks said, "absolutely."
And so are the other 700-plus fans that packed Pen Argyl's gym.
