Making Their Mark

Post by Eaglealum »

I'm pasting an article from the Tyrone Wrestling website, it's pretty interesting if you're an old fart like me.

Making History
At 15-2, the Golden Eagle wrestling team has equaled the schools' best mark in the programs' history. With one more duel win, they will be atop the most wins in one season category. Here's a look at that 1984-85 schedule; then you can see, with the competition Tyrone seeks out every year, why the mark has stood for 20 years.

1984-85 Tyrone Golden Eagles

Tyrone opponent

22 Clearfield 24
51 Baldwin 12
37 Penn Trafford 5
30 Greensburg-Salem 25
57 Bellwood-Antis 3
38 Mount Union 13
44 Penns Valley 9
24 State College 23
39 Bellefonte 21
27 Lock Haven 17
23 Philipsburg 27
33 Huntingdon 24
41 Hollidaysburg 14
54 West Branch 8
28 Bald Eagle Area 23
28 Altoona 21
34 Westmont 18

***- The 1984-85 team won their 3rd district team title in 5 years, had 4 district champs(Ken Myers,LV Haupt,Mike Woodring, and Tom Lannen), qualified I believe 10 of the 12 wrestlers for Regionals, and 1985 was our last state champ, Kenny Myers won the title at 98 lbs.
Members of that team were Adam Campbell,Ken Myers, Chris Dutrow, Chris Fink, Lance Miller, Terry Albright,Dave Fink, Rich Kustenbauder, Leroy Haupt, Tim Elder, Harvey Norris, Pat O'Brien, Brian Long, Mike Woodring, Tom Lannen, and Kerry Cowher.

That is an impressive schedule against some schools with equally as impressive wrestling tradition. Would Tyrone have been AAA at this time?

Why don't you post this years schedule just as a comparison Eaglealum. I'm curious...

Tyrone has always been AA. We did briefly go to AAA in '86 and 87 and then the numbers allowed us back down to AA. As far as schedules go, I'm a copier/paster, and the d-6 site for our schedule and results is down right now or I would have. Our schedule is somewhat similar, however with the schedule points restrictions and the evolution of some of these "super tournaments" we lost State College, Clearfield and Bellefonte from the schedule and we all know Lock Haven combined with Sugar Valley and BEN to form Central Mountain. We had to keep a certain number of the AA conference schools to be elligible for the title. That's why we try to make up the difference with the KOM and Eastern States for Tourney competition. I heard we weren't going to Eastern States next year. If that's true and they don't go east, maybe they could try to get into the Thomas Tourney.

I think the Thomas Tourney has weakened and Tyrone would be better off somewhere with tougher competition.

So does Tyrone still wrestle Greensburg-Salem then Eaglealum?

As my mind was wandering, thinking about where you would take you kids to wrestle if you were looking for a good wrestling school locally, my mind wandered to this thought: What Tyrone wrestlers went on to be college all-americans? Where did they go? And have we had any of them here at UPJ?

If I am asking questions that I could find on the Tyrone site, Eaglealum, just direct me to it.
