BASKETBALL

High School Girls

Westmont 63, Bishop McCort 53

The Hilltoppers had to play catch-up after trailing early to the Crimson Crushers, but Westmont rebounded nicely in the second quarter and went on to a victory on the road.

The win gave the Hilltoppers the inside track to the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference’s Section 2 title.

Kelly Britcher topped the scoring with 22 points while Ali Buchan had 14 points and Katie Lintner added 10 points.

Brooke Pioli scored 20 points for the Crimson Crushers and teammate Brittany Genday had 11.

The Crimson Crushers kept the game close by going 23 for 32 from the line, doubling the number of opportunities that the Hilltoppers had. Westmont went 15 for 16 from the stripe.

Johnstown Christian 62, Grier Academy 9

HOLLSOPPLE – Cindy Blough led the Blue Jays with 16 points and Whitney Graham added 10 as Johnstown Christian won comfortably over Grier Academy.

Everett 57, Rockwood 28

ROCKWOOD – Amy Cessna scored 22 points while Warrior teammate Amy Miller added 12 and Jerrica Smith had 10 as Everett topped Rockwood.

Forest Hills 64, Ligonier Valley 37

SIDMAN – Cara Smay’s double-double –18 points and 10 rebounds – led the way for the Rangers in a win over visiting Ligonier Valley.

Krista Tedjeske accounted for 17 points for Forest Hills while Brittany Skyles contributed 11. Lauren Mizgalski’s 14 points paced the Mounties, who also got 10 from Lindsay Heider.

Fannett-Metal 58, Chestnut Ridge 32

WILLOW HILL – The Tigers used a 20-for-27 performance at the line to defeat the visiting Lions.

Katie Dovey scored a game-high 23 and teammate Jackie Gordon totaled 15 as the Tigers defense held the Lions without a double-digit scorer.

High School Boys

Johnstown 71, DuBois 27

Kurt Hoffman led the Trojans with 21 points and Derek Rose added 20 as host Johnstown waxed DuBois.

The Trojans also got 13 points from Aireon Jefferson.

Bishop Guilfoyle 60, Bishop Carroll 55

EBENSBURG – Sean McConnell led all scorers with 21 points as visiting Bishop Guilfoyle nipped Bishop Carroll.

The Marauders also received 11 points from Matt Barroner. The Huskies’ Jeff Minemyer posted a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Carroll’s Brock Lauer scored 15 while teammate Luke Bender had 12.

Shade 70, North Star 51

CAIRNBROOK – The Panthers were paced by Kevin Kozlick’s 25 points, and 14 points from Ben Leonard – all in the second half – in a victory over North Star.

Joel Kaminsky’s 12 points and Garrett Berkey’s 11 points also aided the Shade cause. North Star’s Mike Buxton had 19 points while Cory Shaffer added 14.

Rockwood 56, Meyersdale 51

MEYERSDALE – Seth Foreman led all scorers with 23 points as the Rockets clipped Meyersdale. Rockwood was also boosted by Zach Sipe and Cody Sanner, who scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Red Raiders got a double-double from Matt Stahl, who scored 15 points and had 15 rebounds. Jeff Miller led the hosts with 16 points.

Portage 49, Windber 44

WINDBER – The Mustangs used 22 points from Randy Spaid and a 17-11 scoring advantage in the second quarter to defeat Windber.

The Ramblers were led by Matt Wilson’s 18 points along with 12 from Joe Swinger.

Ferndale 58, Blacklick Valley 47

Kary Roberts scored 15 points and the Jackets received another 13 from Adam Hale, who added 10 rebounds in the home victory.

Ferndale limited Blacklick Valley to only four third-quarter points to aid in the win. Brad Weimer scored a game-high 22 points for the Vikings.

Chestnut Ridge 60, Richland 45

Ben Way scored 28 points and led the Lions to a road victory over the Rams.

Josh Kohler’s 10 points added to the Chestnut Ridge cause. Richland was led by Jim Cover’s 16 points while Dino Tessari added 14.

Conemaugh Valley 62, Conemaugh Township 53

DAVIDSVILLE – Facing a tight ballgame late, Vince Turner led the Blue Jays to a road victory over the rival Indians, hitting a pair of shots and adding some free throws, as the Blue Jays prevailed.

Turner scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Rory Marshall, Robert Gunby and Brett Sanderson each scored a dozen points for Conemaugh Valley.

Toby McIlwain’s 15 points and Tim Johnson’s 11 paced the Indians.

Forest Hills 63, Bedford 56

BEDFORD – Bedford used a strong second half to cut a big deficit to one, but the Rangers hit eight clutch foul shots during the fourth quarter to salt it away.

Dan Myers led the Rangers with 21 points while Mark Scott’s 24 paced the Bisons. Cory Arnold added 12 points for Bedford.

Salisbury 61, Berlin 52

SALISBURY – Shane Knopsnyder lit up the Mountaineers for 32 points and also had 11 rebounds as the Elks picked up a win over Berlin.

Donnie Zeigler’s 23 points led Berlin.

Marion Center 78, United 61

MARION CENTER – Four Stingers scored in double figures topped by Caleb Griffith’s 21 points in a victory over visiting United.

Joe Rhoades added 17 points while Chad Martin had 14 and Justin Hill, 10 for the host squad. Tim Townsend had 18 points and seven rebounds for the Lions while Greg Yaworski added 17 points and six rebounds.

College Women

St. Francis 59, Wagner 53

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Lady Flash garnered their third win of the season, and ninth in a row over the Seahawks, at the Spiro Sports Center.

Amber Hein scored 16 points to lead the Flash, who also got 14 points from Beth Halter. The Flash got scoring from eight different players. Halter also had a strong night on the glass, pulling down 15 rebounds.

The Seahawks were led by 12 points each from Chelsey Bunyer and Joyce Queiroz, and got 17 rebounds from Ali Ridge.

West Liberty 71, Pitt-Johnstown 63

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Lady Cats took a halftime lead of four points, but could not hold that advantage against the Hilltoppers.

Pitt-Johnstown got solid performances from Samantha Connor and Crystal Andrews, who scored 21 and 20 points, respectively.

The balanced Hilltoppers were paced by Leighann Fry’s 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Charity Street scored 17 points, including a 7-of-8 performance from the charity stripe. Lena Kalvans tallied 11 points.

TELEVISION

Roman featured on FOX sports program

Dave Roman Sr. will be featured today on Panther’s Weekly: Where are they now? on FOX Channel 33.

The show will air at approximately 9:30 p.m., following the St. Francis-Robert Morris men’s college basketball game.

Boutin named starter for All-Star game

Chiefs goaltender Jonathan Boutin ascended to the title of starting goaltender for the American Conference All-Star team when it takes to the ice in Fresno (Calif.) on Wednesday night.

The Chiefs rookie is among the league’s leading goaltenders and moved into the spot after Reading’s Cody Rudkowsky was injured during an AHL game.

Boutin, a 20-year-old rookie, has a .920 save percentage and a 2.93 goals against average with two shutouts.

Charlotte’s Jeff Glass will take Rudkowsky’s spot in the lineup.
