History Lesson

Post by vman »

Now if all the nitters had paid attn weeks ago when some proclaimed ND 'sucked' or we'll definitely beat them. Well Vman said a ND victory was a lock & gave recent history to prove it!

One only had to look at big games since 2000!

In 2000 UPS lost to USC, Toledo (10-1), Pitt (7-5), Mich & Ohio St. while beating one team with a winning record - Purdue 22-20 in Beave stad..

In 2001 Penn State lost to Miami, Wisc, Iowa, Mich, Illinois but beat two teams with winning records both 7-5 OSU & MSU.

IN '02 UPS squeeked out a home win vs (7-5) UCF, @ the Beave, 27-24
also beat Wisc & Va who had winning records but lost to iowa, Michigan Ohio State & Auburn (9-4)

03 was a good year, you lost to every team you played with a winning record: Boston College (8-5) L 14 27, Nebraska (10-3) L 10 18 ,Minnesota (10-3) L 14 20, Wisconsin (7-6) L 23 30, Purdue (9-4) L 14 28, Iowa (10-3) L 14 26, Ohio State (11-2) L 20 21, Michigan State (8-5) L 10 41

That was 0 for 8 that year vs teams with winning records!

Now in '04 thank goodness for Akron, who @ 6-5 was one game above 500!
auhh, every other team with winning record you lost to:Boston College (9-3) L 7-21, Wisconsin (9-3) L 3 16, Minnesota (7-5) L 7 16, Purdue (7-5) L 13 20, Iowa (10-2) L 4 6, Ohio State (8-4) L 10 21, You couldn't even beat at the time below 500 Northwestern (6-6) L 7 14!

Now in '05 guess what, you played one big game on the road Mich...and you lost!

In summary, there are 37 undeniable big games UPS played in last 5 years...Total record in above mentioned contest....30 Big Nitwit losses against 7 wins.....

Oh (I forgot) make that 31 loses now vs 7 wins...and you honestly thought you were going to beat the IRISH in S Bend....Vman tried to warn you all...history repeats itself!

Hey one good thing came of the game today, at least we got to see the JV squads of each team @ the end there! And why was Joey calling time outs @ end of game? Did he think a score would impress the pollsters or make it look like they really didn't get thrashed??

The score was 41-3 ND, then PSU scored two meaningless TDs against Rudy and friends.

Now THAT was a THOROUGH BEATING...PITT played ND better last season.

I am still laughing at that 2nd half MORONelli INT...The ND CB should've just fair caught the ball!!!

PSU=Proved today that last season was a FLUKE, welcome back to reality guys! ALL those who don't wear Blue and White glasses know that MEDIOCRITY is the norm in Crapola Valley. Barely .500 over the last decade.

05- PSU beat Ohio State, I'd say that was a big game. If it didn't fit any of your categories, sorry... I didn't read the post, just saw 05 and blah blah blah.

What a butt kicking the Nits took this weekend. I was out there though and it was a great time. It stinks we got beat that bad, but sometimes things go that way. They got outplayed for sure, but sometimes when things go downhill it just keeps on going. A few different things happen and the game doesn't turn out the way it did...BUT they did happen so....

The bad things that happened:
Hunt Fumble (that happens though)
missed FG snap
missed 2 INT's that really could have both gone for 6...

The two back breakers:
Shiply clip down field takes away a first down inside the 30 and ends up forcing PSU to punt at the end of the half. If this doesn't happen, the worst that happens is the clock runs out 13-0 at the half. This would have been acceptable by me since so many things went wrong. Best case, a PSU TD puts the score at 13-7. However, they get the ball and in 2 min offense against the prevent, they score a TD. 20-0 at the half

Backbreaker 2: Morelli fumbles making a poor decision trying to pitch the ball on the 3rd play of the half. Fumble results in a Defensive TD. Game over at that point. There was no coming back, etc. The last 2 mins of the first half and the first minute of the second half did PSU in.

I don't think they are 41-17 or even the 41-3 bad. On a one game basis, that is how things went. Now, get a refresher against YSU and get ready to try a big game again against OSU. They'll have it tough there too, but I don't think they are as bad as this one game showed. Personally, I can point to a 3 minute span that put them down for the count. Hunt played well and they could have kept running had they not had that happen to them. But.... I still hope for a very good season and a nice run in the B10.

Go ahead and pile on now.... I can accept it, but I still believe they aren't as bad as this game made them look. A few bad things made this one get way out of hand.

The thing that was fun was seeing how many PSU people were out there. I80 was full of PSU fans and the lots were too. In the RV lot where we were, there were a ton of RV's and the ratio was honestly about 20:1 PSU in the RV lot (for RV's not people). For people...way more than that. The 2 rows near where we parked...probably 50 RVs with 1...yes 1 being ND.A lot of people had to come home being upset, but it was still a good trip.

I just hope they know where they stand PSU!! Not a top rated team anymore!! They can have all the fans they want, doesn't make them a great team, WIN the games on the field with great players and they don't have that anymore. Letsssss Goooooooo Mountaineers!!

one loss doesn't end a season or a team, etc.

I'll wait and see. I expect a 2-2 start still, but the team is still ok. The final score of this game was bad, I know that. I honestly don't think they are bad at all though....

I know a box score means nothing at all, but some things to think about (for the optimistics like myself):

PSU- 26 first downs
Hunt- 6.2 yds per carry (needed to get more than 12...he looked good - the fumbles
Morelli-64% completion rate
Walker only averaged 2.9 per carry on his 20 carries.
Without the fake punt yardage, PSU kills the ground game of ND.
PSU only outgained by a few yards for the game.

I'll stand by my post regardless of the score. I know it is excuse making and blah blah blah. They got hammered on the scoreboard and that is the only thing that counts. I would have taken the big W too. I just the world is ending because of this. I see things differently.

Anyway...I'm tired after making the venture out there. As I said, this one is easy to jump on as a Penn State hater... I understand it. You hate us and want to pile on and rub it in. For me, I found positives that didn't show on the scoreboard that proves to me this team still isn't some putrid squad. I expect a much better showing in Columbus, but I still don't expect to win out there. If they somehow pull that one off somehow, some way then it will be an exciting B10 season once again.

Although Penn State lost big here is the positives I took from the game:
-Both lines looked good (defensive line even better)
-Morelli has a lot of upside and makes pretty smart throws
-Linebackers are playing great
-They moved the ball well
-Other than the last drive in the 1st half ND offense didn't control PSU
-Next year when ND loses key positions I can see the score reversing

OSU looks tough, and I don't know if PSU can rebound in time to give them much of a challenge, barring a lot of OSU turnovers.

I agree with Coach, PSU is not as bad as the score indicated. If they score on those first two possessions instead of turning the ball over it is a different game.

It's a long season, and I for one wasn't expecting this team to contend for a national title anyways. If they can finish top 25...they are still going in the right direction. And we are surely better than a few years ago.

Get in your shots while you can...

Go Lions
